Chiefs: “Once in a Great While”
by David Bell
Once in a Great While
From time to time —
A shift happens in the under-seam
of the power structures in NFL Football.
It’s a transition which occurs
where a dominance slips
and gives way for another team.
In the AFC it has been New England
for more than a decade up on top.
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
Sure, there are proponents
of the time Manning was in Denver.
He did get one more ring
and I am happy for him.
New England is on top
until another team knocks them off of their pedestal.
This makes the next game for the Chiefs,
a VIP type game.
Will it be Brady or Mahomes?
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
Would New England be the team
it has been without Tom Brady?
The Chiefs went to Foxborough
twice in 5 seasons versus the Patriots
and came away with a win —
Alex Smith was the Chiefs QB…
Andy Reid was the Chiefs HC…
Bob Sutton was the Chiefs Defensive Coordinator.
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
In John Dorsey’s last draft for the Chiefs
he did Brett Veach a huge favor…
He traded draft picks to move to the 10 spot
and drafted Patrick Mahomes…
a player who was not earmarked to start by Dorsey…
nor the man who inherited the reins…
nor by the Head Coach Andy Reid.
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
Patrick Mahomes the second
sat for a year, learning.
He had Alex Smith and Andy Reid lesson plans…
and he had Matt Nagy in his hip pocket
on the practice field
and on the side lines…
Patrick Mahomes was honed for the starting job in 2018.
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
The 2018 season is five games old.
The Chiefs have suffered an onslaught the past two games
from Denver and from Jacksonville and they came out on top.
Jacksonville dis-respected PMII…
it disrespected the Chiefs offensive line…
it underestimated the Chiefs defense for 3 quarters…
and plain got whipped — wiped — and reckoned with.
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
Denver threw every look possible at Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs came out on top.
You could tell. The players believed in him — on the field.
Von Miller, was handled by Mitchell Schwartz.
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
Jacksonville threw every look possible at Patrick Mahomes.
Sure, Pat didn’t throw a TD and it was a tough game for him…
but he did not panic…
He used the tools available on the field…
and a defensive Pick-Six…
to come away with a win.
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
As importantly for the Chiefs
though giving up huge aerial yards
on the last 3 possessions of the game
the defense held them to 14 measly points.
Ten plus four. Yes, fourteen.
Three less than the magic number 17.
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to victory.
They played their: eye teeth, legs, arms, hips and even a fibula… out
to gain that victory.
Young guys came onto the field to replace the vets
and played their best and succeeded.
The Chiefs won.
Patrick led.
The players believed in him.
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
This week? The top team in the AFC East
will throw all they can at the Chiefs.
But somehow, over the past five seasons,
the Chiefs seemed to have BB’s number
and they’ve come away with wins…
despite the pundits…
in spite of the odds…
in spite of Vegas…
in spite of the NFL Channel.
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
Sunday will tell a tale…
as to whether the Pats give up the label
of team to beat in the AFC.
Even if they win, they likely will take other losses.
They are not the dominate team they once were.
Brady will do his level best to hold this “crown.”
﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏ ﹏
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will do their level best
to lift the crown physically from the brow of Tom Brady
and place it on their own collective heads…
and they will be led by their field general,
on the field and off the field.
The players believe.
You can see it.
I believe.
Do you?

Chiefs 31 Patriots 24.
