Changing the Overtime Rules

Here’s a tweet voicing what many fans feel about the overtime rule:

That’s where I’ve been at for the past week or so. However, let me ask you a question: If the Chiefs had won the overtime toss and then marched down the field and won that game against the Patriots, would you still feel that the overtime rules need changing? Once I heard that question and answered “no” to it… I had a chance to look at the way college football handles overtime and have come away with a different point of view.

In all fairness to each NFL team who finds there season on the line in a playoff game: yes, there should be an equal opportunity to possess the ball in overtime. Now, I’m not so sure I want to see the ball placed 25 yards away from the goal line like they do in college overtime situations but, placing he ball at the 25 with no kickoff seems fair to me. If you score and we score… then start it all over again, like they do in college, until one team fails (unless both teams fail, then you must start again).

Let me know if you have an idea about how the NFL should handle overtime.

Tony Romo is the Man… 68% of the time

I don’t know if you heard but, Tony Romo called out 72 predictions in his pre-play analysis. He was right over two-thirds of the time. While that may not seem impressive to the casual bystander, I assure you, it is… truly amazing. In fact, I wonder if any other color commentator has ever been accurate even one-third of the time. Romo’s ability to get a pre-snap read of a defense and then predict what the offense would do was actually based upon years of experience in reading defenses from under center for the Dallas Cowboys. The reason it seems so amazing is that most game announcers are not QBs who just came off the field the previous year. So, Romo is talking from first-hand knowledge.

On another Romo front, he did not get Bob Sutton fired. There’s been some attention nationally, given to the idea that the success of Tony Romo calling offensive plays in his pre-snap reads made Bob Sutton’s defensive moves look so silly that this is what got Andy Reid worked up enough to can that Bob. It’s my opinion that Andy Reid was going to fire Sutton no matter what happened in the playoffs this year.

Roger Goodell Strikes Again

You have to believe that the NFL owners have gotten exactly what they were hoping for in Roger Goodell, a face, a robot, a puppet, a $200 million dollar don’t-rock-the-boat, do-nothing. It was truly pathetic to watch Goodell address the no-flag situation in New Orleans. Roger Goodell claims:

  • 1) He talked to the Saints players –> he has not.
  • 2) “I feel the Saints pain.” –> clearly he does not.
  • 3) He waited 10 days to address the issue –> but he never addressed the issue (not really).
  • 4) “I don’t think the game has ever been officiated at this level, it’s extraordinary.” –> No, it’s not.

De’Anthony Thomas,

Do Not Pass Go,

Do Not Collect $200

De’Anthony Thomas was arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia possession last Saturday, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Office. DAT is also a Free Agent and we’ve likely seen the last of him. I have always liked DAT and would rather have him back than Demetrius Harris… if I had my druthers. I have never smoked pot but no longer think the possession of it should constitute a legal violation so, I hope that law is changed soon in Missouri. Really tired of seeing pictures that make good people look like criminals. Please, let’s stop doing that.

The Dude… and Ferris Bueller’s Wife

Here’s a Super Bowl commercial that you’ll see on Sunday which came out this week. Spoiler Alert: don’t watch it now if you want to see it for the first time during the Super Bowl.
