Get ready to watch the Kansas City Chiefs destroy the Oakland Raiders. Short week be danged, road game be darned, Chiefs have this in the bag. Where does such confidence come from, following a soul crushing game? From this simple fact: Chiefs played like feline excrement and lost by six points. Did I say they lost? I meant to say that they won, but got screwed out of a touchdown by the doggone Zebras (refs). I think there‘s a strong argument to be made that Demetrius Harris made the catch and the touchdown, even according to the NFL rule book. Frankly, I don’t care what the rule book says, if your eyes tell you it’s a catch, it should be. If the NFL is REALLY worried about it’s ratings, they should fix the catch rules.
Enough about last week. That was then this is now, Chiefs have the best record in the NFL. What’s more, they have a one game lead on the Broncos, and a three game lead on two perennially overrated teams who also happen to be in the AFC West. The Chargers and the Raiders were supposed to be good. Guess what? They are not. Chiefs would have handled this game against the Raiders regardless, but after a tough loss, Chiefs are ready to pound somebody. Alex Smith pretty much said as much, said he was glad they had a Thursday game so they could get the taste out of their mouth. A tiny part of me feels bad for the Raiders. Chiefs are gonna take their day out on Raider QB Derek Carr and company. It’s gonna get out of hand quickly.
Smith and Hunt will be ready to bounce back. Ehinger should finally be healthy and Morse is getting close. Provided Larry comes back by the bye week, or directly after, Chiefs will go back to being an above average OL. Demarcus Robinson might not be 6‘10” (someone should remind Alex Smith of this), but he got open quite a bit against the Steelers. One session with the game tape should tell Smith everything he needs to know. The new starter can be trusted, give him the ball, preferably at eye level or lower.
With each passing day, Chiefs get closer to the return of Tamba Hali and Steven Nelson. Hali could be back within the next couple weeks, and Nelson probably takes over for Gaines after the bye week. These two guys can help take Chiefs D to the next level. I’m not as hard on Gaines (also known as Mr.Tiny Hands) as some, but Nelson is a massive upgrade at the nickle spot. Mitchell had a rough game against the Steelers, but I think he’ll bounce back just fine. Chiefs defense is going to get better, and they haven’t been all that bad.
I’m excited to see how Chiefs respond to their first loss, but I know how I got through it: watching the Giants pound Denver. There’s something incredible about watching your division rival force the other team to go three and out time after time and still be down 20-3 most of the game. Denver’s offense was so bad, Giants could have basically played the victory formation the whole second half and still won. Denver still has a game wrecking defense, but their offense could make it hard for them to win 10 games.
No more moping allowed! Chiefs are 5-1, head and shoulders above the rest of their division and early favorites for the one-seed. Sooner or later they’ll have to get the Steelers figured out, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. Meanwhile, enjoy the ride. It’s a great time to be a Chiefs‘ fan. Go Chiefs.
