Chiefs, ‘Phins’ Win! So, Cry Me A Rivers!

Chiefs, ‘Phins’ Win! So, Cry Me A Rivers!  – it was a great day to be a Kansas City Chiefs fan. Most of us pulled double-duty yesterday, rooting not only for our Chiefs but pulling for the Miami Dolphins, too and… it all paid off.

The Chiefs needed only beat the Los Angeles Chargers to ensure that they were the #3 seed AFC team entering the playoffs next week. They did, 31-21. Then, the icing on the cake would be a Dolphin win over the New England Patriots. This would ensure that the Chiefs were the #2 seed, earning them a bye for the first round of the playoffs along with at least one home game at Arrowhead. They did that too, 27-24.

It all happened, and it was beautiful! CBS announcer Kevin Harlan did a superb job announcing both games at once for the benefit of us fans watching at home.

While the Chiefs got off to a slow start, having to settle for three on their first drive, QB Patrick Mahomes returned to MVP form by games end. Mahomes finished the game with 174 yards passing on 25 attempts with 16 completions, a TD, and one interception. The wily QB also added 21 yards on the ground.

Running back Damien Williams displayed flashes of greatness and defied gravity with two stunning touchdown runs. The first one was an 84 yard sprint midway in the third quarter. His second one,  a seven yard scamper late in the fourth period. Williams finished the game with the two touchdowns and 124 yards rushing on 12 attempts.

Rookie receiver and returner Mecole Hardman showed exactly why he was the Chiefs first pick in last years draft, taking a KO return 104 yards to the house for a quick six following a Chargers TD which had given them a short-lived lead. Hardman also nabbed a must-have catch from Mahomes on third and seven for 30 yards.

Pro-Bowl TE Travis Kelce, unusually quiet during the game and hauled in just three passes for 24 yards. He uncharacteristically missed on two passes from Mahomes. WR Demarcus Robinson hauled in Mahomes lone aerial TD pass of the day, a perfect 24-yard bullet down the middle for the Chiefs only first half score for six, by the Chiefs.

The defense was stellar once more, as they have been since week 11. In addition to two interceptions by the Honey Badger Tyrann Mathieu and “Dirty Dan” Sorensen, the Chiefs D sacked the less-than-congenial Philip Rivers three times. They were also kind enough to record eight QB hits on the Chargers QB, too and Rivers was not the least bit appreciative.

The Red and Gold’s defense held the Bolts to just 108 yards rushing, 287 yards passing, and three touchdowns.

Last week’s double-doinker is part of the forgotten past, as kicker Harrison Butker was perfect yesterday, including a 40-yard field goal that perfectly split the uprights and was true on all four extra points. The single downside for the Chiefs from yesterday’s game was the lower left leg injury to standout rookie safety Juan Thornhill. While blitzing on a play early in the second quarter, Thornhill planted his left leg and apparently was tripped up by the turf.

Shortly after he left the game, Thornhill tweeted,

As of this writing, there is no word as to the nature or extent of Thornhill’s injury. However, it’s rumored that the Chiefs fear that it’s a significant knee injury. While we hope for the best outcome for Thornhill, we can rest easy knowing that the Chiefs have a week for some well-earned rest along with a playoff game in our favorite stadium… as we get by with a little help from our friends… in Miami. Perhaps we can thank them personally when we travel there for our last game in February!

P.S. There is a petition out there for Ryan Fitzpatrick to bang the Chiefs drum in a couple of weeks. No, really:
