Chiefs: Planning Your Trip to Training Camp

It’s that time of year when we’re all itching to see some football and more specifically… CHIEFS FOOTBALL!!!! If you’re wondering which day to drive up to the Chiefs training camp and weather is your major consideration, here’s a look at the forecast for St. Joseph, Missouri for the first five days of camp:

If you’ve never been to a Chiefs Training Camp, you’ll need to know how to get there. The first time I went… I got lost… so here are the directions with a smart phone Navigation tip for you. If you’re in K.C. head north on I-29 until you get to St. Joe and then (if you’re coming from the north such as Omaha, go south on I-29 until):

Once you get to the campus there are signs and workers everywhere who will help direct you to the parking. There is a fee for parking so be sure to have some cash on hand for that.

Of course, you’ll need to decide which days you’ll want to go so here’s the Camp Schedule for the first five days:

Friday, July 28 Practice – 3:30 p.m.
Saturday, July 29     Practice – 8:15 a.m.
Sunday, July 30    Practice – 8:15 a.m.
Monday, July 31  Practice – 8:15 a.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 1 Practice – 9:15 a.m

Then there’s no practice next Wednesday, the team’s first day off.

If you’re going to go to training camp on the first weekend plan on standing in one long line that will include thousands of people. I don’t say this to discourage you from going but get there early if you want to be nearer to the head of that line. Don’t worry too much about it… the line moves fast and will route you directly through the Chiefs store (in a tent) so you can consider buying items before watching the team practice.

Don’t forget to take lots of your own bottled water. Most people will need sunscreen so make sure you have the proper coverage on hand which might include an umbrella which comes in handy in case there’s a little rain. If there’s a lot of rain, practice will head indoors and fans are not allowed to watch the team practice there.

There are bleachers to sit on and a hillside to lay a blanket out but there’s not shade to speak of so plan to bring a hat or cap. The main practice field is nearer to the hillside and while you can see everything from the bleachers you are the width of a whole football field away from most of the action which takes place on field one. Individual drills take place on field two, so there’s plenty to see from there, but head coach Andy Reid guides most of the offensive action from field one.

Above you find a picture mainly of field one with field two clear over on the right… you can see the far end goal post of field two from this vantage point. This picture is taken from the hillside above field one and if you look to the far left you can see the white tent where players who are rehabbing often go to ride a bike to stay in shape. I’ve often thought this was a way to get rehabbing players to want to join their teammates more but having them watch practice while working out.

The picture above is looking out over field two from the hillside and you can see the bleachers to side of field two. At the far end of the fields, there is a red boundary fence and most of the time I like to go down there and get close up pictures of the players while they’re practicing.

If you’ve ever planned a day at the beach, you need to plan on taking most of the same things although a bathing suit is not mandatory… but you will see some people with suits on. Most people are wearing… you guessed it… a Chiefs shirt of some kind.

My apologies… because I was going to get to go to camp this year but I thought I had my house sold and they backed out on the last day. Consequently… I have a request: if any of you are going to camp and want to take either pictures or videos which we can use here at ArrowheadOne… please send them to me here at laddiemorse@gmail.com.

Have a great time at Training Camp, and……….. now I’m officially jealous!
