Laddie Morse
The Kansas City Chiefs Defensive Coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo said this week that he was challenging Safety Bryan Cook to be the quarterback of the defense. Aside from that goal for Spags, Bryan Cook is having a very good Training Camp:
.
.
SI.com has a piece written by Mark Van Sickle called: “Bryan Cook Has Everything Needed for a Second-Year Jump” in which he says:
.
“During his redshirt season at Cincinnati, Cook transitioned from cornerback to safety. In his final season with the Bearcats, he had 96 tackles, a sack, nine passes defended and two interceptions.”
.
So, Cook has experience at Safety and Corner. Sounds like a familiar theme among DBs playing for K.C.. The same was true for L’Jarius Sneed in college as well, and now he is considered the Chiefs best DB. Van Sickle goes on to say:
.
“If Cook takes over the starting role, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a big jump in his statistical numbers. Getting up to 60 tackles, tripling his passes broken up number and getting his first interception should all be on the radar for the 2023 season.”
.
With Juan Thornhill now out of the picture (he signed with the Browns this offseason), that shouldn’t be a very big if. Chamarri Conner (this years 4th round pick) should get similar reps that Cook received last season and if Justin Reid is not re-signed to an extension next offseason — which is doubtful — Cook will be the man in charge on the back side of the defense.
In an article written by Jordan Foote called: “Bryan Cook Drawing Praise as ‘Quarterback’ of Chiefs’ Defense” he quotes DC Steve Spagnuolo who says:
.
“Bryan’s really going to become the quarterback of the defense. And then Nick (Bolton), but especially the quarterback of the back end. One good thing about Bryan is that he’s always looking for feedback. Like he came in the other day wanting to do some more drills. We saw that when we were looking at him out of Cincinnati. He’s a worker. He loves football, passionate about football, and we’re banking on him in that regard.”

Foote goes on the say:
.
“Cook is expected to work alongside Reid and form a sturdy safety tandem while offseason signing Mike Edwards plays his old role as safety No. 3. Veteran Deon Bush and rookie Chamarri Conner also deserve to have their names mentioned in the safety conversation, although their involvement is projected as more special teams-based assuming they make the team.”
.
Bryan Cook reminds me of Ronnie Lott, mostly because of his ability to hit. Speed + Hitting Ability = Excellence.
.
.
Cook will show out in Arrowhead this year and make believers out of the Kingdom faithful. Especially if he reverts to his college ways:
.
.
The Chiefs have had a long line of excellent Safeties and Cook looks to be another in the line of succession. What do you think?
