Chiefs Player Focus: Justyn Ross

The Kansas City Chiefs have themselves a bell cow at the wide receiver position. No, I’m not referring to Kadarius Toney, but he was in the plans to be their #1 WR, but ended up injured, all over again… which resulted in a meniscus surgery. Injury concerns are part of the problem with naming Justyn Ross their #1 Wide Receiver as well, but since they don’t need to “name” a #1, each WR left who is practicing daily, takes a turn as the #1 guy. That comes in handy when they attempt to confuse the defenses of the NFL. In the meantime, Justyn Ross is dazzling (0:05) and (0:31).

When camp first started, I was skeptical about whether or not Justyn Ross would even make the final 53 man roster. Now, I’m so convinced he will, and not only that, but that he could turn out to be the Chiefs best WR… meaning, their #1 WR.

From Band Wagon WR to Leader of the Pack

When you are a band wagon #1 guy, you could end up on the sad side of a trade before the season even begins. While Ross could become a household name by years end, he could also become grouped with Jon Baldwin as a great WR who never made it. From the looks of things in Training Camp, that won’t be the case (0:06):

Patrick Mahomes has high hopes for Justyn Ross as well:

Justyn Ross Injury Perspective

From a piece by sportingnews.com called, “What happened to Justyn Ross?” by Jacob Camenker, he states that:

“When Ross broke onto the scene with Clemson in 2018, he looked like a potential first-round pick. The 6-4, 205-pound receiver served as one of Trevor Lawrence’s top targets and racked up 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns on just 46 catches as a true freshman….. Ahead of the 2020 season, Ross was diagnosed with congenital fusion in his spine — two of his vertebrae were fused together and had limited mobility — that required surgery. He missed the entire season as a result of that procedure and there were questions about whether he would be able to play again.”

This potential “first-rounder” was not taken at all in the draft by the Chiefs signed him in May of 2022 as a UDFA. After having foot surgery, he sat out all of last season but looks ready to roll now (0:08).

You may notice in the video above that Ross draws a lot of attention and the rest of practice nearly come to a complete hault while he runs his route and makes his catch. I don’t want to compare him to “Tyreek Hill” but that’s often what would happen when Hill would run his routes in Training Camp.
