Chiefs Preseason Game One Report
by Laddie Morse
The Chiefs lost to the Texans 17-to-10 and here’s their one big highlight of the game: a TD pass from Chad Henne to Demarcus Robinson:

That throw came with 1:09 left in the first half and was the culmination of a 13 play, 90 yard drive.
The first team offense didn’t do much with the ball and the first team defense was scored on twice so this game wasn’t satisfying from that stand point. The starters on the Offensive line didn’t do a very good job of keeping the pressure off of Patrick Mahomes so we didn’t get a look at his best effort. It was deja vu all over again again with shades of the Titans running all over the field at will. Some key starters were missing from the defense so the Chiefs were weak up the middle again.
Before you panic about the defense, remember, they were missing Eric Berry, Daniel Sorenson, Anthony Hitchens and Reggie Ragland.

I made the observation during the game that the Chiefs were playing a very vanilla defense. Craig Stout explains it much better:
The Chiefs are in a 2-4-5 defense, and they play about as "off" as you can play. Very atypical of a Sutton D that likes to press, and probably just trying on a look to eval their communications/closing. We won't see this in season. pic.twitter.com/5mCjtDB1Df

The Chiefs did have some stand out performers. Matt Derrick made the point that if Demarcus Robinson keeps playing as well as he has been this offseason, he may challenge Chris Conley for the #3 WR position. BJ Kissel explains who set up the Robinson TD catch.
Working on my postgame observations article, and I can't not mention fact that Gehrig Dieter's effort on that third down is what allowed Demarcus Robinson to catch that 24-yard score. It's what extended the drive.

Chiefs fans should be excited about the depth of the Chiefs running game and the offensive line. The 2nd and 3rd team OL kept manhandling the Texans, and consequently, RB Darrel Williams had a good day with 6 carries for 16 yards while Kerwynn Williams had 6 carries for 18 yards. Those may not sound like stellar numbers but the OL was opening some sizable holes and the Williams twins took advantage.
If you were wanting to watch this preseason game because of the extra intrigue involving first round pick Patrick Mahomes, you’ll be disappointed because he played on all of two drives and went 5-of-7 with no TDs or INTs for 33 yards. That’s it. In fact, all of the other K.C. QBs had more passing yards in this game.
If you’re interested in doing some Patrick Mahomes watching, you should go to the Chiefs Training Camp which ends this coming Tuesday in St. Joe. Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday are the last days of camp… already!
Here’s a tough catch made by TE Jace Amaro from Matt McGloin over the middle with 2:48 to go in the 3rd quarter:
The #Chiefs TE Jace Amaro who is fighting for the 3rd TE position, made a tough catch over the middle (shown here) in preseason game 1. He also had a great catch-and-run but it was called back because of a penalty on Tim Wright.#ChiefsKingdom #ArrowheadOne @J_ACER22 pic.twitter.com/9SXvmwgHj3

4th string QB Chase Litton appeared to have the best drive of the night going until it stalled out with 14 second to go on the clock at the Texans goal line. From there they ran out the clock to seal the victory.
I also mentioned this during the game but here’s the video which shows Chiefs NT Xavier Williams pushing his man right up and into the ballcarrier’s manhood:
I'm curious about Xavier Williams. Obviously didn't see much of him, but this was a nice play. Jones obviously did a good job disrupting, but Williams holds up strong vs double until the LB arrives to help. pic.twitter.com/6lkBJzdCIC
