Chiefs Prospects to Watch: LSU v Clemson – there’s a huge NCAA National Championship Football game tonight and it will feature several players who the Kansas City Chiefs will be keeping an eye on, so let’s do the same. 

Below is a list of those players who Chiefs GM Brett Veach and crew will likely be keeping interested in — after they win the Super Bowl — and will possibly end up wearing red and gold in 2020. First, let’s take a look at all the top ten prospects as listed by mlive.com:

• • No. 1 — Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons
  • No. 2 — LSU S Grant Delpit
  • No. 3 — LSU CB Kristian Fulton
  • No. 4 — Clemson CB A.J. Terrell
  • No. 5 — Clemson OL John Simpson
  • No. 6 — LSU LB K’Lavon Chaisson
  • No. 7 — LSU WR Justin Jefferson
  • No. 8 — Clemson WR Tee Higgins
  • No. 9 — Clemson OL Tremayne Anchrum
  • No. 10 — LSU QB Joe Burrow

Of course, not all of these prospects will be given the same scrutiny tonight as some others will be. That being said, all of these players will be given a Veach-ball grade so it’s worth nothing their presence here on the mlive top ten list… as well as being aware of their existence prior to the game.

Now, let’s take a look at the players who have been given a grade by CBS Sports and DrafTek and see where they land which should tip us to the possibility of an interest by the Chiefs.

No. 1: Clemson, LB Isaiah Simmons is rated in the top ten by both CBS (#6) and DrafTek (#8) so while he did show up on one of my early Mock Drafts as a possibility for the Chiefs, he should be long gone by picks 29-32.

No. 2: LSU, S Grant Delpit is a Safety with coverage skills much like Tyrann Mathieu and Juan Thornhill. If Delpit were to fall to the bottom of the first round I would hope the Chiefs scoop him up quickly. He’s just the type of multifunctional DB that Steve Spagnuolo loves to employ in his schemes. CBS has him listed as their #9 prospect overall while DrafTek has him a little lower at #16.

No. 3: LSU, CB Kristian Fulton is someone who has a pretty good chance to land in K.C. in April. While he is ranked #15 by CBS Sports and #11 by DrafTek, I can see him falling a bit — because of the Bump Method — and/or Veach using draft capital to jump up a bit to snag him. One of the analysts at thedraftnetwork.com said of Delpit last summer: “Arguably the most instinctive player on LSU’s defense in 2018 ahead of Devin White, despite his youth.” Ahead of Devin White? Wow, he may just be someone worth jumping up to get.

No. 4: Clemson, CB A.J. Terrell is a 6-foot-1, 190 lbs. corner with excellent natural abilities and although he takes advantage of those natural gifts, he may tend to rely on them too much, like Marcus Peters used to do. He likes to go for the big strip, big hit, or INT while neglecting to cover up on a tackle or two, like Peters too. He’s been accused of being inconsistent, a modest tackler, or not using his body to be physical enough when necessary. I haven’t witnessed those traits on the tape I’ve watched, but I’m sure I haven’t watched all the tape others have. If the Chiefs think he’s coachable, he could be a diamond in the rough. CBS has him at #34 overall and DrafTek has him at #60. If he falls to the end of the 2nd round he’d be a no brainer.

No. 5: Clemson, OL/OG John Simpson is the 56th overall prospect at CBS Sports. There is quite a discrepancy in the ratings of Simpson. Walterfootball, who lists Simpson as the 12th best Guard on his draft board, and he said of him, just today: “Simpson has been solid for Clemson, but he could stand to drop some weight for the NFL. If Simpson does well in pass protection at the Senior Bowl, he could be a riser.” DrafTek ranks Simpson as the 156th best prospect, which would push him to the 4th round.

No. 6 — LSU, OLB K’Lavon Chaisson is a 6-foot-4, 238 lb. outside rush linebacker whose upside looks like Dee Ford. Since the Chiefs don’t run a 3-4 anymore, they have much less use for an OLB with his body type. CBS Sports has him as their #38 overall prospect and DrafTek has him at #51.

No. 7: LSU, WR Justin Jefferson a wideout with skills, not a burner, but has taken full advantage of QB Joe Burrow’s abilities. Since it seems absurd that the Chiefs would take a WR early in this draft. I’ll say no more.

No. 8: Clemson, WR Tee Higgins– (see WR above)

No. 9: Clemson OL Tremayne Anchrum is 6-foot-2 and 310 lbs. lineman, so his height could be an issue for Andy Reid as he seems to like taller offensive linemen.

No. 10: LSU, QB Joe Burrow. The Chiefs wouldn’t select Joe Burrow even if he fell to them (they’d trade out).

The four prospects listed in red above would appear to be the four that Brett Veach and crew will be focusing on tonight. Let me know what you think.
