The Chiefs Are Pushing All Their Chips to the Middle of the Table

When you think about all the change taking place across the league, it’s easy to typify the Kansas City Chiefs roster as being among the most stable. Immutable might be another word to describe it. Since February 1st of this year, there have been more than 300 player transactions in the NFL including, players being released, signed, re-signed or traded. The Chiefs have had 6 player transactions. If you were to go down a list of all the players the Chiefs have on their squad, you’d find that all but two — Bennie Logan and C.J. Spiller — have been with the team before… of the significant players on the team. The Chiefs are pushing all their chips to the middle of the table.

So, let’s do it. Let’s go down a list of offensive and defensive players and see what we’ve got. Here are the defensive players. All percentages are approximate.

Here is the offense:

If I didn’t know better I’d say this must be the Green Bay Packers roster. Oh… wait… general manager John Dorsey spent his whole life — his whole previous life — working in green and gold. The Packers are known for keeping their players and building through the draft so, I guess the Chiefs have reached the clone zone. Score one for the descendants of Lombardi.

What’s clear is that the Chiefs are placing all their trust and belief in the players they have. When you give your kicker a new contract the week before the draft and keeping all of your other special teamers in place then you’re putting all your eggs in one basket. John Dorsey and Andy Reid are placing all their faith in the roster they’ve created in years past for one reason: they believe they can win it all with this group. Why else would they keep the team intact as much as they have?

The draft should help change the outlook of the roster but it’s clear that John Dorsey and Andy Reid have built this team to the point they are at now, regarding the draft. In other words, they’re able to build the team through the draft. When your two big offseason free agent signings include Bennie Logan and C.J. Spiller then you’re obviously turning to the draft for your future. The 2015 draft for the Chiefs was probably my favorite Chiefs draft ever. That’s what I’m hoping for next week, another 2015. That’s right, I’m hoping it’s deja vu all over again. Then, maybe someday we’ll all be bragging about the 2017 draft and Chiefs-Chopping our way to a Lombardi Trophy or two.

What?! A guy can dream, can’t he?
