Chiefs to Receive Four Compensatory Picks

Chiefs to Receive Four Compensatory Picks

Laddie Morse

OTC (Over the Cap) has come out with their Compensatory Picks Projections. These are essentially the replacement picks each team’s receives for losing a significant player during Free Agency the previous year. Since OTC does a good job predicting these Compensatory Picks, we will most likely assume this is what the 2017 NFL Draft — in Philadelphia — will net for the Chiefs when April 27th rolls around, which is the first day of the draft (I can’t wait! It’s one of my favorite 3 days of the year. Yep, even better than Christmas!). Sorry, the OTC Projected List is too long so I’m not publishing the whole chart here but, you can go there to see it if you like. Go –> here. However, here are the picks which OTC is projecting for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Projections

Two days into last March’s Free Agency period the NFL announced it was punishing the Chiefs for violating the Collective Bargaining agreement by negotiating with Jeremy Maclin too early and consequently the Chiefs lost a 3rd round pick in 2016 and will lose their 6th round pick in 2017. Since that is already a given for this year’s draft, by applying OTC’s projection, the 2017 draft could look like this for the Kansas City Chiefs:

K.C. Chiefs 2017 Draft Picks

1st Round- one pick (28-32)

2nd Round- one pick (60-64)

3rd Round- two picks (92-96 and 98-101)

4th Round- one pick (133-137)

5th Round- two picks (155-159 and 172-176)

6th Round- two compensatory picks (209-ish)

7th Round- one pick (242-246)

All of these numbers are based on math that includes the number of compensatory picks each team is receiving in this year’s draft so anything beyond the third round… I wouldn’t quote me on this.

What does seem to be known is, the Chiefs will have ten total draft picks in the upcoming draft. Also, what might make this year’s 3-day event even more interesting to watch than normal is that this year teams can trade their compensatory picks whereas up until this year, they could not. Four picks inside the top 101 should give general manager John Dorsey all the firepower he needs to trade up or back to get the exact players he really wants. You might also see the 3 picks the Chiefs have between 133 and 176 moved to get some deals done as well. It should be a good year for the Chiefs to restock their positions of need. Of course, we all know, John Dorsey doesn’t pick any players based on “need”… but I’m just sayin’… they could restock the positions of needs… if things fell their way.

Things have been falling their way lately so I wouldn’t bet on it not happening in this year’s draft too. I only hope that John Dorsey and Andy Reid have learned their KeiVarae Russell lessons… if there were lessons to be learned there.
