Chiefs: Romp, Rock and Roll! – Good Morning Chiefs fans! It’s a good day for football. No telling what happens on any given weekend as you know. Losing can always get the uptake over even a hometown favorite such as what happened to Green Bay on Thursday.
Odds are you have followed our authors all week and collectively there are some fine pieces that have been written to take you from the Ravens game to today: a 12 o’clock straight up noon game at the Lions confines. I follow as much as I can about other teams, and that can be fun. There are humorous pieces written and some very fine serious ones.
Let’s Take A Deep Peek
The Chiefs are facing an undefeated Lions team. They will sorely be proud of owning that undefeated status against the Chiefs but, keep in mind that one of those undefeated weeks was a “Tie.” Still, for their division streak, the division they play in can often get down to ties and finishes with a season going to the final weekend with 3 teams, 1/2 a game apart.
On the other hand? Don’t despair. I think the Chiefs defense is starting to gel with different player groups. The DL is running stunts and Brendan Daly’s use of the players in a mix is pretty good. The fact is, the defense may indeed be showing signs of putting it all together. It may be a couple more weeks to finally show it in it’s full galore. We will see it though. Soon.
At the same time, the Lions are faced with a daunting task, if Matt Stafford is truly going to be out on Sunday. He is questionable. That’s a tough break for them.
The Lions also boast a good defense both up front and in coverage. The one thing that they excel at is: man up-face coverage and they have even used that with as many Wideouts the opposing team puts on the field.
The Chiefs offense though? You go man up with 3 of our receivers on the field and you don’t have coverage behind the route runners? I think the speed of our guys and the ability of Pat Mahomes finding the open target in full stride is going to work well in our favor. The next scheme the Lions will use is the cover-3 with a single high Safety. Again, that is something Mahomes and Co. attack well… the exposure of covering deep and the speed of our WR’s or matching up Kelce and stopping him? It appears to me to be advantage Chiefs.
On the Offensive Side of the Ball
With Matt Stafford, the Lions are capable as they have shown in 3 games this year. When I look to how they might attack the Chiefs, with or without Stafford, appears to me to be a contest the Chiefs can win, and should win. With Mathieu roaming the field as he has played the past game and half, I think it can mess up the head of an opposing QB because it makes the defense difficult to read before the snap.
I do think that the Chiefs pass rush, with rested players, is showing in the 2nd half, they are using all potential Defensive Linemen and the Corners as well. In particular, in the linebacker role, we have seen Ben Niemann become a major factor on passing downs. It was pointed out that the Chiefs have been doing very well for 3 quarters. I think even in the last game though, Reid stopped doing what was successful. True, we had forced the Ravens to choose the run. That used the clock but, they had a chance to win it, and I complained about it in flight, that Reid took his foot off the pedal. That is a fault that he has exhibited and it needs to stop. The Ravens were a couple of plays away from turning that Chiefs game into a win. Reid is partially at fault for that at least.
All Said and Done
The Lions are not contenders and they won’t gel into such a team. I gave them 13 points in jest yesterday but that is about right. Lions, 13 to the Chiefs 38 and I don’t think Stafford can even help the Lions stay with the Chiefs. Besides the “undefeated streak,” I am pretty sure the downturn for the Lions and their expectations is likely to take several blows to their armor… which is thin.
Enjoy the game. Stay positive even if you are a “Worry Bug.”
