Chiefs: Rookie Minicamp Day Three is in the Book!

KSHB Photo Impression of Rookie Camp – It’s an Eager Bunch

I decided to view the Andy Reid Presser first. I know there will be much material to gather. At this point from Camp, you can say this:

Karlaftis will be solid at the Edge, McDuffie is going to be a smooth, capable defender at Corner Back, and Skyy Moore will be very good for the mix among the WRs. As I follow along, Darian Kinnard is gaining tremendous respect(especially mine). . On Day 3, he was matched up against Karlaftis. Kinnard said, “We are helping each other get better.” If I were to get my crystal ball out, it would be a tremendous battle if Niang is on hand in camp. Since I doubt that will happen, everything I can see about Kinnard tells me he will win the starting role at ROT over Andrew Wylie. There have been varied impressions from the observers, but none negative. I will state that I believe Justyn Ross will be on the roster and in the player mix for the WR group. Yes. I know it’s my early take on that.

LB Leo Chenal provides exciting glimpses of what the trio of Linebackers will be capable of doing. He has side-line-to-side-line speed. Add Chenal to starters, Bolton and Gay, and this LB corps will set a tone for the defense, and as you consider the “trios,” that outlook extends to the expected Trios of starters at Cornerback and safety. A considerable step up from where we were three seasons ago. Bryan Cook gives a solid indication of how things will appear on the field, and I Look forward to these five players as a forecast of the Chiefs starters this coming season.

Andy Reid During the Presser

You could hear the HC-speak during the Q&A. I observed that Andy Reid had a smile break out when replying to questions early in the session. He came away from this “try-out” camp very pleased — at least, that is what I read into his behavior before the camera today. He commented that McDuffie was very smooth during the three-day sessions. I know that Spags spent time with him, specifically working on techniques for both the outside and inside. Another notable occurrence was the attention of Spags. Another was with George Karlaftis.

The Player Sessions

I wasn’t able to glean much from the three players. During Joshua Williams’s briefing, the one impression was man he was tall. Nazeeh Johnson was up. As the session’s questions rolled on, he became more comfortable and gained a smile when answering questions. Mike Rose was last. He mentioned that the waiting was tough during the draft(He wasn’t drafted), so we’ll see where it ends up. I did think he would be drafted, though.

Day Three Admissions

Above I detailed several players whom I expect a lot. If I took the back-end of the defense and made it a trio of starters, then at LB, I have Gay, and Bolton teamed with Leo Chenal. At Cornerback? Sneed, Felton, and McDuffie, while at the same time, I think Jaylen Watson folds in as a fourth in the rotation. The Safety Group will be strong! Reid, Thornhill, and Bryan Cook! I am gaining more and more respect for Darian Kinnard as an OT. I noted that my impression is that he will win the starting role as the ROT. Skyy Moore is another player about whom I have grown far more confident in what he will bring to the table. Finally, George Karlaftis will play better than his pick at #30. Before the draft, if you recall, I had said he shouldn’t be a round-one draft pick. I was wrong, and the Greek Freak will prove me wrong.

I remain skeptical about the status of the IDL. I hope for a Veach move to sign an experienced hand for the LDT — someone who can at least spot in on passing downs, who has pass-rush credentials. I have grown more comfortable with the Edge role, but that comfort level will depend on getting Mel Ingram aboard and either Herring or Kaindoh stepping up! We’ll see when camp days begin. Reporting for camp will begin May 24.
