Chiefs At Seahawks: Open Thread

Alright Kansas City Chiefs fans, this is as real as it gets. In the Preseason. The Seattle Seahawks are known for playing to win every single game they play and that includes preseason games. Plus, the fact that this game is being played in Seattle in front of the second best 12th man alive (they’re never going to beat the record for the loudest stadium in the world that the Chiefs fans broke at 142.2 decibels)… and this game will look as much like a regular season game as it’s going to get.

The Chiefs starters are scheduled to play for the first three quarters which should make this game even more revealing about the final 53 man roster because it should clear up who is on the first team and the players they substitute in and out of the game during that time should tell us more about who they’re considering for the first team as well.

The Chiefs coaches will want to get a good look at three players coming off the sidelines. Chris Jones likely sees limited action. Same with Eric Berry. I’ve never seen that guy need to knock the rust off  but he’ll probably have his snaps limited too. Roy Miller will need to step up and show he belongs in the DL rotation with Bennie Logan. This is Miller’s debut this preseason and after easing him in we all want to see what he can do and the Seahawks are the perfect test. If Miller can play well against Seattle, he’ll be good to go once the regular season rolls around.

I’ve learned that the reason that the NFL will no longer have a cut down to 75 players after the third preseason game is that… the coaches all lobbied for it. They want to have enough players to play out the fourth preseason game without playing their starters very much. It also gives them more tape on each of these players that they deciding between and that could help them in the cut down process.

Ex-Chief player D.J. Alexander will be wearing #58 for the Seahawks in this game if you want to see how he’s doing. Conversely, this will be a return to Seattle for both Kevin Pierre-Louis and Ron Parker. I wouldn’t be surprised to see KPL have a good game and make at least one play that stands out (players love to prove to their old teams that they were wrong to trade them).

The QB picture should be decided this week too. While Patrick Mahomes II has looked great so far this preseason we will want to see if he can keep it up against a top defensive team. For Tyler Bray, this is his chance to move back up the depth chart if Mahomes falters. The Chiefs starter, Alex Smith, has been playing lights out all offseason and in the first two games of the preseason too so this will present him with his biggest challenge. If Smith can play at the high level he’s been playing at against the Seahawks then we can feel more comfortable projecting a similar success in the regular season.
