Chiefs Seasons as Star Wars Movies, 5-1

By Josh Kingsley

Welcome back everyone! I truly hope the enjoyment level reading the first 6 films of my Star Wars/Chiefs season countdown was high as mine was writing it. Let’s start with a quick recap of where we have been:

.

  • We have listed 6 films, and all the Episodes, 1-3, are off the table. These, like most kids born in the 80s, are my least favorite. We also have 2/3 of the new trilogy gone as well. Again, kid of the 80s.
  • It should also be pretty apparent that I am a big fan of this Mahomes Era thing we are currently doing, but I want to be as clear about this next point as I am about my love for the whole franchise: I LOVE Alex Smith. This is also another column for another time, but I believe AS11 should be in the Ring of Honor. He’s done that much for this franchise.
  • I want to also note that the 11 seasons we are matching are the last 10 and upcoming one. Being a previously noted 80s kid means that I got to live through DT, Marty Ball — which is said with utmost affection — Marcus Allen, Joe Montana, etc. I don’t think I can possibly pick only 11 season I love, but guarantee the 2012 season mentioned is NOT part of it.
  • Sorry for not adding a spoiler alert at the beginning of Part I, but I assumed anyone who would really care has seen all of these 2+ times each.
  • Everlasting Note: Tom Brady is Darth Vader.

.

Now, without further ado I present…

.

The Last Jedi <-> 2015 Season

Episode 8

.

I consider this film the crown jewel of the newest trilogy. Kylo Ren really rounds into his villainous form. Mark Hamill straight up brings the heat. I love the direction the story goes. Do I like the Canto Bight sequence completely? No, not really, but I do understand the reasoning it is there… and I love the character Benicio Del Toro plays. I consider this to be the second heaviest movie of the entire franchise. The exploration of consequence and duty is thought provoking and on point. After all of this my favorite part is the red and white visual of Crait at the end of the film.

All that talk about consequence and duty takes full form here. Finn becomes a warrior. Ren becomes focused to a fault. Luke Skywalker solidifies his spot on the Mount Rushmore of Jedi. They must totally have one of those somewhere.

The hands down best shot in that entire film is the moment before Ren rushed Luke. The foot move. Brilliant work Rian Johnson and team! You deserved another film.

Now let’s talk some Chiefs football. When I think about the 2015 season I think about the playoff win. I also remember the 1993 playoff win against the Oilers. I was 11 and prepping to move from the farm to the town. Joe Montana and company took care of business and rolled into Buffalo on a mission. The problem was the greater mission was Buffalo attending (and losing) a Super Bowl. We got killed. Every year that progressed after that became clearer memories. Dolphins, Colts, Broncos and I am going to quite writing this before I throw the keyboard.

The 2015 playoff win MEANT something. If for nothing else it meant we were no longer the “20 years and counting” team. So happy watching that Texans game. There is an important detail I have not mentioned about this season. And I did not mention because I actually forgot. We were 1-5 that season… and then, we were 11-5 that same season. If you’re keeping score at home that means we won 10 straight. That 5 game losing streak happened on Canto Bight. We beat the Texans on Crait.

.

Return of the Jedi <-> 2021 Season

Episode 6

.

I am going to make this one really short and sweet. Empire ends, the world waits 3 years, Luke walks into Jabba’s palace and wrecks the longest running pain in the Han. Luke completes training. A bunch of Ewoks join forces with the rebels. Another Death Star is destroyed. War won (Except it isn’t. To quote “Weird Al” Yankovic in the venerable tune Yoda: “we’ll be making these movies til the end of time.”) Football version: Empire = last season, Jabba = our OL play, Ewoks = D upgrades, Death Star = don’t bet against us.

.

.

A New Hope <-> 2017 Season

Episode 4

.

There are a few times in life that you have the opportunity to see a film that changes your life and/or perspective on what constitutes good entertainment. I was not alive in 1977, so I did not get that experience with Star Wars. My best example of getting to do that was the original Matrix in 1999. Literally questioned what I just watched. Anyway, I often picture 1977. The cinema world is owned by Burt Reynolds, who has a new movie coming out. Of course you go see Smokey and the Bandit, but a couple days before that, this funky sci-fi flick comes out. I have many times pictured myself walking out of the theater blown away by the journey. New heroes, new villains, and new toys to buy. What a time!!

I picture myself expecting a good movie and leaving in awe.

Enter the 2017 season, and we had just come out of preseason, that came out of camp, that came out of the biggest draft I had personally witnessed. The biggest and best moment my MKE watch party has had is LIV. I have to put the 2017 draft as #2. It was a small group compared to the game, but the biggest draft watch we have ever had. This was finally the year we pick a 1st round QB, and Reid would develop. Literally the first time I could say that. We get through the first of the draft and Mitch Trubisky to the Bears is the only QB. For the record we all knew that was wrong when it happened. Pick #10 and the Bills are on the clock. TRADE!! Our watch room was pandemonium.

.

.

Then… an argument: Watson or this Mahomes guy who suddenly was in some headlines? I will forever admit: I was team Watson. Sweeney said Jordan, and I heard him. Most analysts said Mahomes was too far off to risk, and I believed them… and then… the pick happened, and I went nuts. First words: in Dorsey and Reid I trust. That was simply an irrational statement from someone who had uttered the same thing about Pioli and Haley. However, I generally characterize myself as a sports optimist. It just paid off this time. I went into the 2017, or metaphorical theater, to watch a good movie. I left the season with that Bronco game and an exasperated Von Miller presser. My belief at that moment that we had our guy. Wow.

.

Rogue One <-> 2018 Season

.

This leads me to my second favorite Star Wars movie. I, like most fans, went to the theater for this one, and it was because I did. Disney kicked off their era with The Force Awakens and it was a blast. This new sub story concept seemed cool. A vignette about the Death Star plot seemed fun. Darth Vader may show up? Cool. Let’s grab a matinee.

My wife and I reluctantly and dutifully bounced a tad early from work to catch this one. We left the theater in utter awe completely shocked at how well that movie was done. The hairstyles were vintage of pre New Hope. This is the heaviest movie of the franchise. Spoiler Alert again but… Disney had the guts to kill of the entire cast. The fact that it was the actually what needed to happen was irrelevant. I didn’t think in a million years I would watch that, but it was magnificent.

2018… that was the season. Mahomes was supposed to be the new hope, not the second coming. I drafted him in the 5th and 6th rounds of my fantasy leagues I won, and it was because of him. Matthew Berry of ESPN suggested, via readers, a donation of winning to the key players charity, and 15 and Mahomies got some $$$$ on my behalf. He was MVP by a long shot. The Chiefs were a 55 offside call away from the Super Bowl in his first season at the helm. No one saw that coming.

.

Before we finish off this list, let’s take a quick look back at the other entries:

.

11. Attack of the Clones <-> Chiefs 2012 Season

10. A Solo Story <-> Chiefs 2017 Season

9. Rise of Skywalker <-> Chiefs 2016 Season

8. Phantom Menace <-> Chiefs 2011 Season

7. Revenge of the Sith <-> 2020 Chiefs

6. The Force Awakens <-> Chiefs 2013 Season

5. The Last Jedi <-> 2015 Season

4. Return of the Jedi <-> 2021 Season

3. A New Hope <-> 2017 Season

2. Rogue One <-> 2018 Season

.

And Now for the Number One Star Wars Movie as a Chiefs Season…

.

.

The Empire Strikes Back <-> 2019 Season

Episode 6

.

Simply the best. In both cases. Growing up I was a firm believer that Star Wars/A New Hope was the best. It was the revolutionary. How could a sequel be better? But then I did my picture myself there thing. It’s 1980. I was smitten with Star Wars and so ready for this. Hoth gave us the walkers. Then we met Yoda. We learned that Obi Wan was not full of crap when he talked about being more powerful dead. And that doesn’t cover half of it.

.

.

We go on to meet Lando Calrissian, plus learn one of the greatest secrets in cinematic history. Then, we get one of the most botched quotes. The movie goes on to end with Luke mangled and Han Solo in carbonite. Okay cool, this will clearly get sorted in Return of the Jedi… but the world had to wait 3 flipping years to get there. That realization is what finally brought me to what I view as the only conclusion: Empire is simply the best.

There is nothing more I can possibly say about that 2019 Chiefs season. Simply the best!
