Chiefs Sign Two Players on Friday

The Kansas City Chiefs signed quarterback Matt McGloin and wider receiver Nelson Spruce on Friday. McGloin looks to be the third-string quarterback while Spruce will compete to make the roster.

QB Matt McGloin, 6-1, 210, has the distinction of being the first walk-on player to ever start a game at quarterback at Penn State University. He was signed as an UDFA by the Oakland Raiders in May of 2013. In four season for the Raiders, he started 7 games with 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. McGloin signed a one-year deal with the Eagles last April but was released on September 1st prior to Philly’s Super Bowl run. He was signed on November 3rd by the Houston Texans following Deshaun Watson’s injury but was released four days later as the Houston did the Texas two-step shuffling QBs.

WR Nelson Spruce, 6-1, 210, went to Colorado where he set all kinds of records. Although it’s been reported that Spruce has some juice, his 4.69, 40-yard dash time will keep him from getting separation in a league where separation is job-one for every wide receiver. Spruce was an UDFA signed by the L.A. Rams in 2016. Spruce set 31 school records while at Colorado and also set a Pac-12 record with 19 receptions in a single game. It’s hard to tell why the Chiefs would want to sign Spruce unless they see him as a “camp-body” with an outside chance to make the final 53. The reason I say that is because Spruce spent more time bouncing on and off the Injured Reserve list than on the active roster (Spruce also spent time with the Bears):

  • 05-06-16: Rams sign WR Nelson Spruce.
  • 11-18-16: Rams place WR Nelson Spruce on IR.
  • 12-30-16: Rams place WR Nelson Spruce on the IR (Designated for Return list).
  • 09-03-17: Rams place WR Nelson Spruce on IR.
  • 09-05-17: Rams waive WR Nelson Spruce.
  • 09-06-17: Rams cut WR Nelson Spruce.
  • 10-17-17: Bears added WR Nelson Spruce to the PS.
  • 01-01-18: Bears removed WR Nelson Spruce from the PS.

Although Spruce may only be with the Chiefs for a short while, you may want to view his college tape.

Question: If you could choose for the Chiefs to sign one more Free Agent — of significance — prior to the NFL draft, for what position would that be? Safety? Nose Tackle? CB? OLB? OL?….

Here’s a list of current (?) NFL Free Agents (updated on March 28th).

Have a great Easter Weekend!
