Chiefs: Stop the Panic! Il Bosa is Here!

Chiefs: Stop the Panic! Il Bosa is Here! – The Chiefs will reassess the situation in the Defensive backfield and along the Offensive Line in a couple of weeks. Not yet though.

First, Consider the Offensive Line

Worry about the OL has not reached epic proportion. Fisher will get back, for example in 6 weeks. He won’t go to the IR. The Chiefs substituted OL Cam Erving for Fish. He has NFL Experience at every OL Position. Not many subs can say that. He has be a capable starter. It is left to you to consider this at the same time:

a. were you one of those who were complaining about Fish prior to this week?
b. were you one to complain about Erving for two years running?
c. Have we now reached your horror point if both a and b are true, correct?
d. Does c., your horror point, become the season’s vanishing point?

I didn’t think so. Erving is a decent sub and knows the players and defense. This may not be optimum. It is not the end of the world, comprende?

Were Observers of Linebacker Wrong?

The linebacker crew is play pretty well. The staff has got to take into account fatigue and get those sub snaps in to give the starters a blow in order to keep fresh and strong legs. This is especially true for Anthony Hitchens who had 155 snaps over two games.

Spagnuolo has already acknowledged this and given Ben NIemann more snaps. look for those to increase from here forward. He should get 15 to 20 snaps in the middle.

No doubt the LB room needs to continue to develop. It is not bad, it just doesn’t have  DJ amongst the players. That is a special kind of need and one that is very hard to find or fix.

New Blood at Cornerback?

Is the clamor for hiring on Jalen Ramsey built on panic? Explain Why That is? The Chiefs shut down a “good” Raider team and held them to 10 points (under 17).

After giving up a bunch of yards in the air in game one, the Chiefs are one of two teams to have 2 cornerbacks rated 70 or above in the NFL (Fuller & Breeland). So I went and checked. Ward is looking better too. But look, he has been the defender that is picked on. 25% of the attacks in air go against Ward’s side of the field, whether they Chiefs are playing man up or zone. He has given up yards, and a big play or two but has not given up a TD.

It seems to me that Spagnuolo has to acknowledge this fact and when in man coverage, make sure the up safety is keeping an eye on being the backside interceptor for Ward which word can take into account and play close coverage knowing he has back up. If there are two offensive targets built to the left side of the Defense, effective communication has got to happen in timely manner before the opposing QB begins his audible counts.

Here is another thing: if we have two guys who are CB’s doing pretty well on defense, and two safeties doing pretty well behind that, doesn’t that bode well for the future with the player we are fielding as starters and backups right now? I like our Safety group: Thornhill, Mathieu, Watts, Lucas and Sorensen.

If I look down the road 2 games, our cornerback room will improve by one experienced corner: Morris Claiborne.

For two more games we have: Fuller, Ward, Breeland backed up by Fenton. When you add in Claiborne things look even tighter but toss in my observation about Fuller and Breeland’s performance thus far.

We have to be patient about any move that Veach will make. Two 1st round picks for Jalen Ramsey is ridiculous. I am not sure even a 1 pick for him at all is valid. He is not one of the top 10 CBs according to PFF.

Perhaps the things that are not correct about evaluating performance of cornerbacks in the new era of aerial bombardment (the new form of Air Coryell), must be taken into consideration. Part of what is incorrect evaluation in today’s new world of constant aerial assault: preventing yards and scores, is tougher with a lot of teams averaging 25+ PPG (11 teams in 2018).

What has to happen is figure out who the players are who disrupt routes and targets enough where the likely success of a throw is bypassed and then the QB moves on in his progression. Disrupting the offense is so much of the game: for the secondary and the front 7 at the same time.

Your direction is one of self-determination: I recommend: sit down, sit tight. Veach will add a player but he has other tasks that need to get done and it may be our public panic which has falsely arrived. While it might be nice to have Ramsey, or Howard, or PP… I doubt it happens.

Fish? Reiter Struggling? Back to Cam?

Nothing to do about the injury to Fish. It happened, we have to use our roster strength to get around it. This means Cam Erving. Root for his success.

Now I have not seen a lot of blitzes straight over the OC be successful which tells me we are okay straight up. I have seen defense stunts be effective and that is due to the players being unfamiliar with each other and failing to hand-off blocking properly. That should iron out.

I hear you about Erving… he is not your ideal player. I don’t believe he’s as bad a player as most fans verbalize. No, he is not a long term replacement for Fisher but he knows the offense. Pat Mahomes will have to keep a special eye out for the left side of the line. He may have to use LDT and Schwartz to roll their blocking right (sort of like Len Dawson’s moving pocket designed by Hank Stram).

If the run game falters? Go to the straight “I-formation.” Use Sherman to blow up blocks in front of Thompson and to add a superb blocker for Pat Mahomes. Use a tight end for power as well. The passing game? Strike soon and often. Make their coverage come tight… then go over the top with DRob, Hardman and Watkins.

Back to Fish (My Trailer)

Grab a rod and reel, go out to the stream or to the beach, listen to the waves and the wind, cast the line in and calm down. Sheesh~! Then for the afternoon, you can come back and watch the game with kewl jazz and blues flowing (see/hear below) through your veins as kewl loyalty and rational thinking invade your body and mind. You might even hear some Sinatra crooning on the wind, or Stan Getz playing front for Joao Gilberto whose wife Astrud, sings the song everyone knows…. the motion that everyone feels with the music. Kewl Jazz from south America which invaded the US in the 1950s. Love that music… stop the panic, Il Bosa is here!

Man, it’s time to chill a bit!  The Kewl Blue Final Score? 36-24. No, the Ravens are not Kewl!
