Chiefs Take the Fifth For Andy Reid – Although I was confident in my Looking Ahead section last week concerning the Jets coming into Chiefs Kingdom (I predicted a 42-0 Chiefs victory), I worried, too. In my mind, our matchup with the Jets seemed like a trap game waiting to happen. Worse still, my dreams last week were filled with all the things that could go wrong.

What an idiot, right? I know. As for my defense? I plead the fifth.

Speaking of the fifth? How about our own head coach, Andy Reid, now tied for fifth place with Curly Lambeau in NFL wins with 229?

That’s 229 games in a little over 21 years. It’s not only a testament to Coach Reid’s football genius, it speaks volumes on his ability to change with the game and take full advantage of the weapons at his disposal while compensating for his weaknesses. Don’t overlook, either, his interaction with his players and his staff. Players want to play for him. Coaches want to coach for him. Why? Andy Reid treats everyone like an equal. He listens to them and takes into account their ideas and their feelings. Reid is not only the prototype for a successful NFL head coach, his commitment to excellence while respecting those who work for him, with him, and against him is aspirational. The world would be a much better place with more people like him in it.

Next on the list? Hall-of-Fame Dallas Cowboys HC Tom Landry at 250 wins.

The game itself was a classic Andy Reid masterpiece. QB Patrick Mahomes threw for over 400 yards (416) with five touchdown passes to four separate receivers. Four different running backs carried the rock for the Chiefs in four quarters. The Chiefs defense held the New York Jets touchdown-less and allowed only nine points, with zero in the second-half. Plus, as if to make it a particularly Andy-like victory, special teams play included a first down fake punt pass by a rookie punter along with a blocked field goal.

Big Red is easily the most skilled head coach in the game today, bar none. Yes, Bill BeliCheat, I’m talking to you. By the way, how’s things going without Tom Brady?

Stat(s) of the Game

Besides Coach Reid’s slide for the tie into fifth place for the winningest NFL coach, here are a few other notable stats from today:

• In seven out of eight games this season, the Chiefs defense has allowed fewer than twenty points.
• Yesterday, Travis Kelce surpassed Chiefs great Otis Taylor (who should be in the NFL HOF, by the way) for the second-most games with 100+ receiving yards by a Chiefs player in franchise history.
• Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill now has 23 career touchdowns of forty-plus yards. This ties him with Hall-of-Famer Randy Moss. With his two TDs in yesterday’s game, Hill now has 49 career receiving touchdowns.
• Patrick Mahomes tied former Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck for the 3rd-most games with 300+ pass yards in their first 4 seasons in NFL history with 21
• Mahomes holds the franchise record for the most one-plus touchdowns in consecutive games with 18 straight games. It’s also the longest active streak in the NFL.

… and the Game Ball Goes To…

Despite being benched in his last two outings, I’ve got to give the game ball to Patrick Mahomes. His five touchdown tosses, 416 yards, and zero interceptions should finally shut up those who openly wondered if Mahomes had lost his magic or that defensive coordinators had figured him out. These people need to learn the difference between truly diminished skills (see Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Cam Newton, etc…) and a fifth-place NFL-winning future Hall-of-Fame coach with the ability to call a balanced offensive game.

How’d I Do?

Right or wrong, I’m claiming victory here. I predicted a 42-0 Chiefs victory. We won 35-9. Being off by 16 points is not a big deal. Especially when your team wins.

Looking Ahead

Next week, we host the 3-5 Carolina Panthers in another Sunday noon game at Arrowhead Stadium. I call for another Carolina loss and a game in which Patrick Mahomes once again gets pulled in the fourth quarter in favor of Chad Henne. Chiefs take it out on another victim in a 42-6 win.

Parting Shot

I’ll forgo the obligatory “Go Vote” message here. We already did that last week anyway. Tuesday’s election will come and go and the world will keep on twirling regardless of the outcome.

Besides, my biggest worry this week is the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers, who look like the team to beat if we want to repeat as AFC representatives in this year’s Super Bowl.

Mike Tomlin is doing a bang-up job as HC this year, and Ben Roethlisberger looks as if he’s found the fountain of youth. The top-ranked Steelers defense looks like the Steel Curtain of the 70s reincarnated. They are a Formidable Foe with two capital “Fs.” The road to the Super Bowl thus far looks like it runs through Pittsburgh.

I’m not yet ready to worry yet, however. We’ll be neck-and-neck with them soon enough. After all, we have Patrick Mahomes. With Mahomes, as everyone knows, all you have to do is – ketchup.
