The Kansas City Chiefs have the best quarterback in their team history right now. Knowing that… I began to wonder how many other best of the best players they have? So, let’s take a look.
.
Patrick Mahomes Over Len Dawson
Let me make this perfectly clear… I LOVE Lenny Dawson. However, Patrick Mahomes is not only the best QB in the history of the NFL, but he’s also the best QB the Chiefs franchise has ever had. StatsPros.com has an article called: “Len Dawson vs Patrick Mahomes Stats” in which they featured these stats and more:
.
.
While this is not a completely fair comparison, because Dawson played in 211 games while Mahomes has only played in 80 games so far, it does give us a feel for the level of performance each player has delivered. Another difference to take into consideration is the “period” each played in. The current period is all about passing and many have now called this a passing league. Also, Mahomes hasn’t faded yet so his stats don’t show his rundown stats from late in his career. Also to be taken into consideration is that fact that Mahomes has played with one of the best — if not the very best — tight ends in the history of the game in Travis Kelce.
.
.
Travis Kelce Over Tony Gonzalez
The battle for the best all time tight end is still without an answer. However, since Tony G. left the Chiefs and spent the last five years of his career with the Falcons, so Kelce gets the call here. Here’s are the career stats for both Tony Gonzalez and Travis Kelce (so far) offered by StatMuse.com:
.
.
.
Here, Kelce sits with Gonzo to break down some tape (8:45):

.
At some point, I expect Travis Kelce to surpass the output of Tony Gonzalez, even though much of his stats were achieved with a different club.

Creed Humphrey is the NFL’s Best Center
Charles Goldman at ChiefsWire.com wrote a piece in early June called: “PFF ranks Chiefs’ Creed Humphrey as NFL’s best center” in which he says:
.
“Humphrey had a good case to be considered the NFL’s top center as a rookie, but the old guard of Jason Kelce and Corey Linsley put a damper on that. Humphrey already landed on Pro Football Focus’ list of the top 25 players under 25. Now, they’ve released rankings of the top 32 centers in the league heading into the 2023 NFL season and Humphrey has graduated from good to great.”
.
While the Chiefs boast the best Center in the NFL, it now becomes a question of who can they keep? The Chiefs can’t keep all these “great” players, so who can they keep?
.
Trent McDuffie Ranks 24th in the NFL
PFF ranked the top 32 CBs in the NFL and Trent McDuffie came in at #24. In their article, they said about McDuffie:
.
“The Sauce Gardner grading curve ruined all other rookies by contract, but fellow first-round rookie Trent McDuffie was excellent for the Chiefs after he got back in the starting lineup. McDuffie was immediately thrown into difficult assignments in the Chiefs’ defense and allowed just 10.1 yards per reception all year.”
.
BTW, they also ranked L’Jarius Sneed as the 26th best CB in the NFL.
.
Nick Bolton is One of the League Best
SportsIllustrated has ranked the best Linebackers in the NFL and Nick Bolton came in at #10, in only his second season in the league. Here’s SportsIllustrated’s top Ten LBs:
.
1. Fred Warner, 49ers
2. Roquan Smith, Ravens
3. Bobby Wagner, Seahawks
4. Shaquille Leonard, Colts
5. Matt Milano, Bills
6. Lavonte David, Buccaneers
7. Demario Davis, Saints
8. Dre Greenlaw, 49ers
9. Tremaine Edmunds, Bears
10. Nick Bolton, Chiefs
.
Here’s what SI.com had to say about Bolton:
.
“You might not be familiar with the name, but you’ve definitely noticed the middle linebacker in the No. 32 jersey flying around making plays for the Chiefs during postseason games. Bolton, 23, flashed as a rookie in 2021, but he really took his game to the next level in Year 2 by stacking 180 total tackles, the second most in the league. As a unit, the Chiefs’ defense often gets forgotten (as teammates of Patrick Mahomes); Bolton said himself that the defense doesn’t get the respect it deserves. It’s also time to acknowledge that Bolton is one of the best linebackers in the league.”
.
Here is Nick in the Super Bowl (1:33):

.
I’m excited to see how much Bolton progresses this season in his 3rd campaign.
.
Chris Jones is the 2nd Best DT in the NFL
SportsBrief.com ranks DT Chris Jones as the leagues second best DT as of right now. Aaron Donald was listed as the best DT even though he had a down year in 2022. SportsBrief.com said this about Chris Jones:
.
“Jones has been one of the top defensive tackles in the NFL for a decade now (as of 2023) and had one of the most productive seasons of his career in 2022. He topped the league in pressures (77) and the best pass-rush win rate (20.2%) of any interior rusher. While Chefs defense declined in the 2022 campaign, everything lies on him and Nick Bolton to switch things up and make it better in the upcoming season.”
.
.
Andy Reid is the Best HC Going!
Aside from the players who rank among the league and Chiefs’ best ever… the Kansas City Chiefs boast the best Head Coach in the league right now. A website called, the33rdteam.com ranks Andy Reid as the best Head Coach in the NFL… and so do many other websites! Here’s what they have to say about Reid:
.
“Reid has sustained success for more than 20 years with two different franchises and an assortment of quarterbacks. Plus, he’s been to three of the last four Super Bowls and won two of them. There’s nobody better right now than Big Red.”
.
.
If I’ve missed out on one of the Chiefs best players… ever, or in the league right now… please let me know.
