March 2. Today is the Eve of the Eve for the NFL Beauty contest, called the NFL Scouting Combine, at Indianapolis… which officially opens today, on TV. Again, the Chiefs played well into the post-season. They lost the AFCCG in 2022 on January 30th to the upstart Cincinnati Bengals. The result dashed the hopes of the Coaches, Staff, Players, and Fans. At least we didn’t need to wait 3 months to get to the point that we can see the players chosen to appear at the talent show… because the Chiefs played their last game on January 30th. A February game though did not take place as anticipated. Still, it was only about a month until the Combine event at Indianapolis begins. Even if players weren’t invited, there are still the Pro Days which will begin to take place around the country at various colleges.
Pro Days, No Long Wait Either!
As the Combine winds down, the Pro Days kick-off and the start is scheduled to begin at Miami(OH) on March 8. Several Schools will hold their Pro Day on March 9th, beginning in the South East, at Alabama A&M. That same day both Kansas and Kansas State will hold their events. Then the days march forward into April, and just preceding the NFL Draft, they too will be completed. It’s a month and a bit more of examining prospects, recording results of the analytics taking place across the league. Big Boards will be constructed by the teams, pundits, and fans.
Schedule for the NFL Scouting Combine
Thursday 3.3 – TE, QB, WR — Running starts at 4:00 pm and the last player off-field around 11:00 pm
Friday 3.4 – OL, RB — Running starts at 4:00 pm and the last player off-field around 11:00 pm
Saturday 3.5 – DL, LB — Running starts at 4:00 pm and the last player off-field around 11:00 pm
Sunday 3.6 – PK, DB— PK workout 10:30 am – 1:30 pm — and DB running starts at 2:00 pm, and the last player off-field around 7:30 pm

The Official NFL Tampering Period – March 14-16 (NFL Cheating Day)
Beginning at 12:00 noon, New York time, on March 14 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m., New York time, on March 16, NFL Clubs can contact various players who are Free Agents of other teams, he contact must be made through the certified agent for each player. Only players whose contract expires officially at 4:00 PM Eastern Time Zone, March 14th, when the players become official UFA’s(Unrestricted Free Agents) may be contacted and contract negotiations may take place. clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with, the certified agents of players who will become unrestricted free agents upon the expiration of their 2021 player contracts at 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 16.

I doubt that the Chiefs will be active in the first days of Free Agency, but they might, because of team needs such as WR#2, DE, CB, LB, and S. I am sure though, that after the beginning slaughter that goes on in snatching up players as if the teams were cookie monsters getting into Grandma’s Cookie Jar and they will be paying top dollars for those “cookies”.
By the Way
The deadline to tag a player is March 8, but players don’t necessarily have to sign their tag until the summer, so it can be used as a placeholder to buy Veach and Brown’s representatives more time to talk.
Pro Days
A few days before the Free Agent Tampering period occurs, around the nation, players will be tested and measured at the various Pro Days and it all ends up in late April as the NFL Draft takes place.
The NFL Draft – April 28-30
Round One occurs on April 28th. By then, the microscope will still be deployed as the various team’s GM’s, Scouting corp, and the associated coaching staff gathers in a room for the big Hoopla that occurs every year. I truly would like to sit in the room and just inhale it all as Brett Veach, Clark Hunt, Andy Reid make their decisions.

- NFL Annual League Meeting – Mar 27-30
- Teams with New Head Coaches – On April 4th, Teams with new HC’s may begin offseason workout programs.
- All Teams – April 18: Off-Season workouts allowed to begin.
At Least the Process begins, two days hence. Soon the waiting will be over. The Chiefs will have signed their target Free Agents of their own and hopefully some newcomers. We will know by the end of the draft, the players released. Then the rookies will prepare to report to Rookie Camp and the Season’s process begins.
Then it’s the draft, and we all will know a bunch more about where our prospective teams are headed in the 2022 season.
