Chiefs: the Good, the Bad, the Stupid

and Just What IS Going On

From the Game Against the Jaguars: the Good

The best, of course, is the good guys scoring more points than the bad guys. The Chiefs are 5-0 and nobody thought that would be their record headed into the matchup in Foxborough. The defense looked to be improved, several players gave us some good play.

Terrance Smith is starting to pick things up. If his pass coverage improves and his tackling needs to improve, but he could be earning a new contract before the next league year. Orlando Scandrick is earning his keep, he might be the best corner on the team right now. Kendall Fuller was a very good trade investment, especially since Alex Smith was going to be leaving anyway.

Jordan Lucas had a good game, we’ll see how he looks starting versus the Patriots, he could end up taking Eric Murray’s starting safety spot away from him. He’s another that could play his way to a new contract.

Chris Jones pick 6 was totally awesome.

Harrison Butker, Butker is perfect so far this season, 7-7 on field goals and 22-22 PATs. Of the kickers that have made 100% of their FGs, only 3 have more attempts than Butker and Butker’s 22 PATs leads the league.

Travis Kelce, yet another 100 yard receiving day. The opposition might be able to contain Kelce for a while, but they can’t keep him tied up for the whole game. Plus, he’s more than just a receiving TE.

The offensive line, they’ve done a great job protecting the QB and the run blocking is starting to improve as well.

From the Game Against the Jaguars: the Bad

Injuries hit us in this game.

  • Laurent Duvernay-Tardif has a broken leg and will probably be out until at least Thanksgiving. I thought it strange that he was able to walk off the field, only to find out his leg is broken (hopefully our resident Dr. can give us some insight).
  • Justin Houston is going to miss some games with a hamstring, we simply don’t need him missing more games so I hope he can get back in the action quickly.
  • Tanoh Kpassagnon tweaked an ankle early, but after Houston left, he came back in and gutted out the rest of the game, but he wasn’t overly effective.
  • Eric Murray left the game injured, but I haven’t heard about his status.
  • Armani Watts has been moved to the Injured Reserved list.
Interceptions, Penalties & Dropped Passes

Patrick Mahomes, I don’t think Mahomes played a bad game at all and his first interception looked like the ball just slipped  a little coming off his hand, but the second INT looked like he was trying to force things. His sack looked like he was trying to make something out of nothing, just trying to do too much. Hopefully it’s a learning experience. I do like his aggressiveness and he does have the ability to do more than almost any other QB, so I guess that’s just going to be what we can expect. I certainly don’t want to see him get hesitant and gun shy.

The Chiefs remain one of the most undisciplined teams in the league. I believe the Steelers are the only team to have committed more penalties.

It  isn’t just this game but there were a couple drops Sunday that could have been touchdowns but ended up as field goals. That drop by Kelce late in the second quarter, he could have just walked into the end zone stopping for coffee on the way.

From the Game Against the Jaguars: the Stupid

Personal Fouls

Man, oh man, 4 personal foul calls and two ejections. Now, personally, I think the first PF call against Dee Ford was pretty wishy washy. That just seemed really weak. The second one I get, there is a rule specifically forbidding standing over an opponent and taunting.

I’m sure Chris Jones PF and ejection was a retaliatory move, but that just isn’t something he can do. I understand getting mad if an opponent is going for the knees but he just made himself look bad with that “punch” and I’m guessing the Jaguar player wasn’t hurt at all.

Kareem Hunt is going to be losing more money this week. As I recall, way back when, blood boils a lot quicker when you’re young, but losing his cool like that isn’t going to help anyone. If this had been a close game, losing players and losing yards for less than intelligent play could have cost the game.

Just what is going on?

Can anyone recall a head coach seemingly ignoring parts of a game to sit on the bench with a player? I get that Andy Reid realizes he has someone very special in Patrick Mahomes, but it seems that between almost every offensive drive, Reid is on the bench with Mahomes, with Henne and oft times Kafka nearby. I don’t know if Reid has complete confidence in Sutton to handle the defense without him watching or if Reid is as tired of watching the same old, same old as the rest of us.

As innovative and exciting as Reid’s offense is, Sutton’s defense is as exciting as watching paint dry. Base D on first down, then almost regardless of what happens on first down, whether a gain of 7 or loss of 3, we go nickel on second and third down. Until the end of a game, then we allow the opponent to gain a lot of yards by playing “prevent” D, we put in a dime package, rushing no one and letting the QB stand in the pocket forever deciding where to throw the ball.

Maybe Andy has already decided that Bob is going to retire at the end of this season and Andy is just going to let things ride without interfering. It just seems odd to me that the head coach looks uninterested in the defensive play or it just could be that I’m not seeing enough of the picture. What do you think?
