Chiefs: The Importance of FLASH

Laddie Morse

With the 2023 season already upon us, it’s time to take a look at what is important in the NFL, especially when it comes to the Kansas City Chiefs. When you ask yourself who is the “flashiest” player on the Chiefs roster, many will say it is Patrick Mahomes, and rightfully so. When Tyreek Hill was allowed to move on to another team last year, it was his flash in the form of speed and quickness, that made many a Kingdom follower cringe at the thought of the Chiefs offense without him. Why? The loss of flash. Now, we’re looking for that kind of flash again, and so are the Chiefs.

RB, La’Mical Perine

Up until this past preseason game, many were under the impression that Deneric Prince had a stranglehold on the last RB position on the 53 man roster. I’m not so sure that’s true anymore. Why? Because he didn’t show us any “flash” in the game against the Arizona Cardinals. Who did show us some flash? That would be La’Mical Perine (Note: Prince is #34 and Perine is #29):

Those clips may outline the importance of showing your talent more than any other and reveals the necessity of making every play when a play needs to be made. Especially when it comes to blocking. However, blocking isn’t the only aspect of the talent game that Perine outshined Prince at running the ball too. Ron Kopp Jr. noted Prince:

.

“He’s got a lot to prove today, because La’Mical Perine looked better than him last week.”

.

Sure, Prince scored a TD here, but there wasn’t much “flash” to it (0:24):

Brett Veach

Veach signed Perine back in January to the Chiefs Practice Squad. After the Super Bowl, Veach then signed Perine to a Future’s Contract and it’s worth noting that he’s played for four NFL teams in all including the Jets (who took him in the 4th round out of Florida in 2020), the Eagles and the Dolphins. When Perine played for the Jets he showed some of his speed on a TD run around end:

Ihmir Smith-Marsette had a great game vs the Cardinals. He had 4 receptions for 92 yards plus a TD (shown above, 0:39). Here’s one of his other catches on a long pass from Blaine Gabbert (0:11):

QB, Patrick Mahomes Flashing

No… not that kind of flashing. The kind that gets you attention. Like when Mahomes jumped out of bounds off his left foot and threw the ball to MVS and hit him in the hand before the ball fell incomplete… it was a flashy play never-the-less (0:13).

.

It’s exactly those kinds of plays that gets most QBs in hot water… but not Mahomes. For him, it draws attention and in reality, it’s those kinds of plays that he, more often than not, succeeds at.

On the other hand, there have been those players who are camp player known as “flash-in-the-pan” kind of guys who either get traded or just plain cut. I hope if Brett Veach can find a trade partner, he’ll pull the trigger.
