Chiefs: The New Two (should be 3) and a Preview

Laddie Morse

The title could have been: “Chiefs: The Three New and a Preview” but Brett Veach likes to keep us guessing.

The team is set. Everything is going as planned. Well, not exactly. Anyway, the Kansas City Chiefs have made their Alchemy Day moves by waving, releasing and trading for… all the players that will make up the 2024 squad. It’s done… now and forever… for now, that is. What does that mean. It means, Brett Veach’s work is never done and the team we know that Andy Reid will coach up and go to battle with in September is not necessarily the team he’ll be able to count on in January or February (as in, when the playoffs begin). Let’s take a look at the moves the Chiefs made yesterday (these are listed in the oder of most important moves, to the least important moves, mostly):

Significant Moves

WR, Nikko Remigio – Dave Toub pounding the table for NR didn’t work.

RB, Deneric Prince – 2nd year in the K.C. system.

RB, Louis Rees-Zammit – will he return to Rugby or stick it out here?

LB, Swayze Bozeman – a 4.40 LB is unheard of. Hope he sticks on PS.

WR, Justyn Ross – big surprise, hope he doesn’t get claimed.

WR, Kadarius Toney – longest Punt return, a Super Bowl record. Now gone.

QB, Chris Oladokun – made progress this offseason/preseason.

CB, Kamal Hadden – usually team keeps same year draft picks.

WR, Montrell Washington – had an excellent offseason and preseason

TE, Irv Smith Jr. – Veach signed him in March. Now gone.

DB, Deon Bush – just turned 31.

LB, Cole Christiansen – UDFA with Chargers in 2022. Cut then signed with K.C.

WR, JuJu Smith-Schuster – returns to team after one year in N.E..

DE, Cameron Thomas – cost, a 7th round pick. FAU not ready to step up if needed.

TE, Peyton Hendershot – cost a 7th round conditional 2026 pick.

Reid will love this guy (0:23).

Other Moves

OT, Lucas Niang – always hoped Niang would develop

CB, Ekow Boye-Doe – somewhat surprised he’s gone

DT, Fabien Lovett – had high hopes for Lovett

DT, Neil Farrell – same for Farrell

CB, Keith Taylor

CB, Kelvin Joseph

CB, Miles Battle

DE, Owen Carney

OG, Griffin McDowell

LS, Randen Plattner – a temp

TE, Geor’quarius Spivey

WR, Phillip Brooks

OL, Nick Torres

WR, Kyle Sheets

DL, Alex Gubner

QB, Ian Book

DB, Tyree Gillespie – waived with an injury designation

RB, Carson Steele

OT, Ethan Driskell

CB, Chris Roland-Wallace

I probably know the least about Chris Roland-Wallace out of USC, so I looked up some highlights to share (2:48):

Note: You’re going to like his tape a lot. So surprised CRW wasn’t drafted.

Yes, the Offense is carrying 26 players while the Defense is carrying 24. That has happened three other times during the Andy Reid era in K.C.. How Skyy Moore keeps making this team over players like Justyn Ross or Nikko Remigio, I’ll never know. Although, I am super happy with the way the Chiefs develop players.

What do you think of our 2024 Kansas City Chiefs roster?
