Laddie Morse
There’s a new kid in town… actually two new kids in town. Well, to be perfectly honest, they might both not be in town yet, but they will be… and much will be expected of both of them. The two newest members of the Kansas City Chiefs Kingdom are, Xavier Worthy, who was drafted on Thursday evening when Brett Veach traded up to pick #28, and Kingsley Suamataia, an Offensive Tackle who played his college ball at Brigham Young University (BYU). Let’s begin with the the newest member of the Kingdom, OT, Kingsley Suamataia.
.
.
Kingsley Suamataia
Kingsley Suamataia is an Offensive Tackle who played for BYU from 2022 to 2023. While his first season as a Freshman was at Oregon he redshirted that season and played in only one game. Chiefs QB extraordinaire Patrick Mahomes tweeted out this message after Kingsley was drafted by the Chiefs on Friday evening:
.
.
Kingsley is 6-foot-5 and 325 lbs. and should be exactly what the doctor ordered, being the protector of the Chiefs — and the NFL’s — most important asset, QB Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs have been looking for a blind side protector of Mahomes for years now and it looks like they’ve found a great one. Suamataia will be in a training camp competition with Wanya Morris who filled in for Donovan Smith last year when necessary.
.
.
However, the position looks like it’s up for grabs and Morris will end up being a solid backup. Suamataia’s Relative Athletic Score looks like this:
.
.
Kingsley Suamataia ranked 86th out of 1,314 OT from 1987 to 2024. That places Suamataia in the middle of the 93rd percentile of all OTs since 1987. He should be proud of that accomplishment. Although K.C. doesn’t currently have any players who had previously gone to BYU, there is one player who did and he came to K.C. as a UDFA and that’s Daniel Sorensen. HC Andy Reid’s first head coaching job was at BYU and since he is Mormon, we know he has a special place in his heart for players from Brigham Young.
.
From DraftBuzz.com about Suamataia,
.
“As a sophomore for the Cougars in 2022 Suamataia he played in 11 games and a total of 632 snaps. He conceded 6 QB hurries, 2 QB hits, and no sacks while playing at right tackle [during his sophomore season of 2022]. In 2023 as a junior Suamataia saw action in 11 games and totaled 644 snaps. He gave up 9 QB hurries, 6 QB hits, and 2 sacks while playing at left tackle.”
.
Two (2) sacks given up in 1,276 snaps. That’s pretty darn good. Of course the NFL will send Edge rushers much better than Suamataia faced in college, but that’s a great place to start. By comparison, Donovan Smith gave up two (2) sacks in 749 snaps in the 2023 season.
.
Freak
.
.
Any time you’ve drafted an athlete that was ever tagged as a “freak” you’ve done well. Speaking of Freaks, let’s talk about…
.
Xavier Worthy
The 4.21 40 yard dash time is the first thing that jumps out at you, but it should not make you stop there. Although, Worthy’s 40 time is enough to stop you dead in your tracks, I think some fans have pigeonholed Worthy into a speedy-only category when that’s not all he is.
.
.
However, let’s not forget that he owns the land record for running fast at the NFL combine:
.
.
As Robert Griffin III has said of Worthy:
.
“Xavier Worthy is more than just a fast guy. He is much more of a fluid route runner than he is given credit for and not just a one trick pony. Even still, Patrick Mahomes throwing to the man with the fastest 40 in NFL History will have people rushing home from Church to see it.”
.
NFLDraftBuzz.com also says of Worthy:
.
“Worthy is a natural playmaker, at his best with the ball in his hands. If you give even a little cushion he’s going to beat you. Not just a deep threat he’s a nightmare to defend on slants. Fluid athlete with an elite explosive burst and speed to stretch the field and breeze past defenders. Has a quick first step and gets to top speed in a hurry. His speed is simply elite – He ran multiple 100-meter dash times between 10.5 and 10.65 seconds while in high school. He also repeatably ran sub-4.5 second 40-yard dash times as a freshman in high school.”
.
The strategy with Worthy and Hollywood Brown will often be to keep opposing defenses on their heals and as Brett Veach has stated repeatedly, to keep defenses guessing. 810 WHB published this on Thursday evening following the draft:
.
.
Welcome to the newest two members of Chiefs Kingdom. We’ll have continued coverage of Rounds 4-7 today (Saturday) and it will all begin around noon Eastern time (11:00 AM CDT).
