Chiefs: The Whole Town’s Talking About the Jones’ Boy

Laddie Morse

Let me be perfectly clear: Chris Jones is NOT a boy. In fact, he’s “THE MAN”… when it comes to interior defensive tackles in the NFL. Yes, he had a better year than Aaron Donald, who many believe is the best DT, but last year, it was Chris Jones everyone was talking about. The whole town’s talking about the Jones’ boy… indeed they are. As they should be. Why, because, as you know, Chris Jones is holding out and everyone and their mother has an opinion about what the Kansas City Chiefs should do until he returns.

With the first game of the 2023 NFL season coming up in two days against the Detroit Lions in Arrowhead Stadium, it’s critical that the Chiefs have Chris Jones ready to rock-n-roll by game time, but now, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

.

.

From the song:

.

“The buzz is over the fences,

That he’s going out of his senses”

.

While there are many fans who think Chris Jones is “going out of his senses” they are the ones most likely to be “going out of their senses” and besides, it’s just an opinion, about a matter that none of us really knows much about:

.

.

Jones’ fellow players should know as much as anyone about his situation and with All Pro TE Travis Kelce pleading with him to return, we can get a good feel for how his teammates think.

.

.

“We need you bad:” Kelce pleads and recognizes that the Chiefs chances of winning another Super Bowl this year go up considerably with him in the locker room as well as on the field. So, should fans take a hint from Kelce? Ben Levine wrote a piece for MSN.com this week called, “Report reveals how much money Chiefs DT Chris Jones is seeking” in which he says:

.

“… that the organization is offering Jones a three-year, $74MM deal that would wipe out the $19.5MM the player is set to earn in 2023. $70MM of that money would be guaranteed for injury….

Jones would be willing to split the difference between the offer and Donald’s contract at around $28MM per year. So, that means there’s around a $10MM total difference in value between the two offers (a hypothetical three-year, $74MM offer from the Chiefs vs. a three-year, $84MM request from Jones).”

Having read, or heard, that, do you feel differently about Chris Jones situation now? I don’t. What Chris Jones decides to do about his agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs is his business, not mine. Even as a Chiefs fanatic. So, I bow out and I can “hope” he returns… but having a definite and entrenched position about it?

No. How can I? How can we?

It’s not our money or body that CJ puts on the line each day. So, how can we take sides. The reality is that one player (Patrick Mahomes is working on a 10 year, $450,000,000 contract (agreement), while Chris Jones is scheduled to make about $20M this season without a new contract. Sure, most every one of us are saying that this is a ton of money… but comparatively? Sure, the masses can reason that paying a top rated QB is not the same as paying a top rated DT… but the difference is significant.

Still, it’s not our business.

It’s up to CJ as to when he wants to return and it’s up to CJ as to how much he wants to play for. I wrote a few days ago that:

.

“If I’m reading Brett Veach’s smirk the right way in his recent presser, four days ago (access the 2:00 mark for the Veach smirk), I believe that DT Chris “Show Me the Money” Jones will be back in the Chiefs line-up for game one vs the Lions, even if it is only on a part time basis.”

.

Consequently, CJ may be ready to sign a contract today, Tuesday, September 5, 2023. If he does that, he’ll be back in the lineup, even if it is on a part time basis. However, getting CJ back part-time, is an awful lot like getting him back on a full time basis, IMHO. Just yesterday, the Chiefs had several players address the media including Travis Kelce, and Adam Teicher asked him about his recent comments on his podcast when he said, “I don’t get it” referring to Chris Jones’ hold out, to which Kelce replied, “I was just trying to have some fun with talking about the situation, just trying to bring some light to it, just trying to be funny, but:

.

“At the end of the day, Chris has his situation, Chris

has his reasons, um, it ain’t none of my business.”

.

So true. So true.
