Chiefs Top Offseason Stories

It’s been an offseason like no other. The Kansas City Chiefs have gone through a metamorphosis of sorts and while some of it was planned, much of the rest of it was waiting to see how things sort out on their own. To a certain degree, were still waiting to see how things come out.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…. Yes, that was indeed the case with Rashee Rice. One month — five weeks –after being sited for: one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury… Rice was charged with assault on a cameraman at a Dallas night club in the middle of the night.

It’s never a good thing when a player for your team is sited by the police, but in this case, it looks liek Rashee arice will be suspended by the NFL for half a season… whenever that may be.

The Chiefs place kicker gave a commencement speech to the Benedictine College graduates (Benedictine is a Catholic University) and said some things that upset a lot of people. Here’s the Full and unchanged speech by Butker:

In a routine offseason, this might be the biggest story for the Kansas City Chiefs. Marquise “Hollywood” Brown is a Wide Receiver who was signed by GM Brett Veach on March 18th, just a few days into the Free Agency period. HIs addition to the Chiefs WR room along with the release of Marquez Valdes-Scantling went a long ways towards repairing that position. Hollywood has been seen working out with Rashee Rice recently.

The Chiefs used their first three draft picks on WR Xavier Worthy, TE Jared Wiley, and Safety Jaden Hicks. Actually K.C. traded pick #32 plus their 4th rounder, pick #95, and their 7th rounder, pick #221, to the Bills for their picks: #28 and #133 and #248. While many expect Worthy to show his worth immediately, I would hope he scores a TD against the Bills when they play in Buffalo on November 17. Some have gotten carried away with the future production of TE Jared Wiley.

Safety Jaden Hicks has already been called the “steal” of the draft by many a pundit.

When this offseason began, the Chiefs re-signed LB Drue Tranquill and shortly thereafter Chris Jones. The deal for Chris Jones was huge and a bit of a surprise because I didn’t think K.C. would re-sign him and instead trade him away to gain cap space. Now, I’m gald they re-signed him and his deal is for five-years and $158.75 M with $101 million in guarantees. How the team was able to do that with Patrick Mahomes on the books is amazing to me. Later in the offseason they re-signed Travis Kelce and extended him to a deal worth $34.25 M which goes through 2027. How the Chiefs are able to balance thier cap budget is beyond me.

Apparently, the Chiefs did not have enough cap money to spring for a deal with their star CB, L’Jarius Sneed. After all was said and done, Sneed ended up getting a big bag of money from the Tennessee Titans for four-years and $76.4 M. Some have speculated the CB would be replaced by Trent McDuffie but they are very different players. Perhaps Jaylen Watson or Joshua Williams will step up.

When the NFL announced their calendar of games for the 2024 season, they had the Chiefs playing a schedule that included a game being played every day of the week (except Tuesday of course). That hasn’t happened in nearly 100 years.

A few years ago, the Chiefs lost a Super Bowl — 31-to-9 in SB LV — because both of their Tackles went down with an injury prior to the game. The following offseason, GM Brett Veach traded for Orlando Brown Jr. (a first, third, and fourth, round picks in 2021 plus a fifth round pick in 2022) to fill the void at Left Tackle. Since then, they’ve allowed Brown to walk after two seasons then signed Donovan Smith last year, someone who was barely an upgrade last season. Now, they are relying on either a second year man in Wanya Morris or a rookie Kingsley Suamataia to step up to the plate and protect Patrick Mahomes’ blind side.

The NFL Schedule shows that the Chiefs are playing the Bills in Buffalo on November 17th this year. A review of Taylor Swifts’ concert date schedule shows that she is playing in Toronto on November, 14, 15, 16, 21 and 22. However, the league denies any conspiracy theories.

It’s laughable to me that there are AFC West opponent’s fans… the Chargers fans in L.A…. who think that their new head coach, Jim Harbaugh, is going to make a difference this season. Harbaugh is big on the run and his offensive scheme won’t work in the NFL. Back in 2013, Jim met his brother John in Super Bowl XLVII and although his team out rushed their opponent 2-to-1, they lost that game. Harbaugh could end up helping the Chargers in the long run, but it’s going to take some time… if it works at all. I say that because Harbaugh had some smash mouth success at the college level, but I’m not so sure it’s going to work in the pro game. First of all, his players need to buy in, but I’m not so sure he’ll get that kind of support.
