Chiefs Training Camp Day 13:
OPEN THREAD
by Laddie Morse
Band on “The Run”
Reggie Ragland made his feelings perfectly clear about whether or not the Chiefs will be able to stop the run this year. Pardon his French but Reggie hasn’t read my rules about no cussing on ArrowheadOne… yet… so I’ll forgive him in advance:
While Thursday evening’s Preseason Game #1 (PG#1) was not fun for most Chiefs fans, many of us have come to the conclusion that the Chiefs were simply testing the waters and unwilling to give away anything about their offensive of defensive schemes.
Chris Jones is @stonecoldjones_ Mic’D Up
When Chris Jones talks, people listen… or they get thrown out of he way. The Chiefs are fortunate to have someone like CJ on the team to give them some juice during practices.
Jones had 6.5 sacks last year including 32 tackles plus an INT but his greatest contribution may be keeping it light-hearted.
Speaking of Unfair Comparisons
Alumni in the House… Tent
Can you name the following 6 Alumni? Start with the top row going from left to right:
Amerson: Feast or Famine?
Yes, David Amerson was called for 2 Pass Interference penalties in 3 plays during PG#1 but I don’t think the off-man coverage scheme that Bob Sutton was running was doing him any favors. I’ve seen him do much better than that in camp:
The Chiefs fully intend to run him out there with the #1s so we should give him a break until mid-season. Then, if he’s performing the way he did on Thursday, fans would have a right to revolt. Just not yet, please.
Patty-Takes: “I Want a New Drug”
Patrick Mahomes went right back to work at Training Camp and he had perhaps his best day yet enticing some fans to not only jump back on the wagon but go overboard at the same time:
I guess any time you go 13-of-16 in a 7-on-7 passing drills then fans are going to get excited but if your name is Patrick Mahomes and you do it…. Most of us are waiting for it to translate to real time game action but in lieu of that, we’ll take him tearing up the practice field. However, this fan-obsession-bordering-on-Beatle-mania is not helping the situation at all:
Let’s stick to just the football on the field:
Soaring Sorensen Concerns
Here’s a medical statement from Rick Burkholder, the team’s Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance on the nature of Daniel Sorenson’s injury:
“He has what’s called a tibia plateau fracture. So, it’s his tibia, which is your shin bone, he has a fracture in there. He was fixed at the University of Kansas Health System by two surgeons—John Sojka, and Paul Schroeppel.”
Burkholder then revealed that Sorensen’s injury was more than a tibia fracture:
“He also had an MCL injury and a lateral meniscus tear. They were all fixed.”
Then Burkholder gave us a statement that included a possible time frame for projecting his return:
“We now have to wait for the bone to heal,” he continued. “So, with all bones that are broken, we will reexamine him at six weeks. So, there’s no time frame other than we’re going to reexamine him then.”
Let’s take a look at the “tibia plateau fracture” first.
Since every fracture is different, we have no idea of the real extent of Daniel Sorensen’s injury. However, that fact that it is coupled with an MCL surgery including a lateral meniscus tear repair, his rehab time could be more than we were first led to believe. Here’s a picture of the lateral meniscus:
Lastly, let’s look at the location of a medial lateral ligament (MCL) tear:
Viewing pictures of the actual keen locations of injuries pushes me towards a longer rehab than first thought. Two summers ago, when I began ArrowheadOne, I attempted to get a Doctor friend of mine in Houston to give me a report on what he thought Justin Houston’s total rehab time might be. Though my friend was unable to help then, two full years later, we can see that it was a much longer journey that we believed it would be for Justin Houston and we’re still not sure he’s back to his — Jumping Jack Flash Sack Blasting — self.
My take is… it will likely be 2019 before we see the old fireball Dirty Dan Sorensen we love… the one who plays best “next” to Eric Berry but not instead of Berry.

You don’t want to miss David Bell’s stream-of-unconsciencness piece which comes out this morning here on ArrowheadOne at 10:45 PM CDT which is called::
Enjoy these last three days of the Chiefs Training Camp. Go Chiefs!
