Chiefs Training Camp Day 14:

OPEN THREAD

Patty Takes: Up the Hill

BJ Kissel does a great “Up the Hill” features in which he talks to a player while walking up the hill and back to the locker rooms. Here’s his interview with Patrick Mahomes:

So, Mahomes would choose Zombo, Sherman and Kelce to survive the Zombie Apocalypse with. Okay, which three players would you choose?

Fear the Cutting Room Floor

GM Brett Veach has been on the job for a year now and done such a bang up job of filling this Training Camp with more than just “camp bodies” — as some would like to say — that the team is going to have a hard time choosing who to keep or cut. HC Andy Reid is always pitching the idea to his players that they are creating “tape” for other teams to consider them but I don’t think that many of the Chiefs cuts will have a problem landing a spot on another team. That’s just how good this year’s depth at some positions has become. Take the running back position for example: there’s Kareem Hunt of course but after that, there are so many differing opinions on who stays or goes. Damien Williams is likely a lock. Spencer Ware is probably the same but could end up on extended IR which would open a spot for another RB in the interim. Anthony Sherman has been a lock for years and will most certainly be again. Now, before you write rookie UDFA Darrel Williams off your keeper list, take a peek at his pass catching skills.

That leaves one or maybe two RB positions for: Kerwynn Williams, Darrel Williams, and Charcandrick West. The problem is even greater at wide receiver. There are 13 WRs in camp but only 6 will most likely be on he final 53 man roster while the first four appear to be locks: Hill, Watkins, Conley, and Robinson. That leaves 9 WRs to fill 2 positions on the roster. There are several players there who I believe will end up on other teams… perhaps even be a starter by year’s end. Which WRs would you keep on the 53 man roster besides the four locks I mentioned? Here’s a list of WRs to choose from. Pick two (remember, one of those picks will probably be at the suggestion of Special lTeams coach Dave Toub):

  • 1. DAT
  • 2. Gehrig Dieter
  • 3. Byron Pringle
  • 4. Daniel Braverman
  • 5. Josh Crockett
  • 6. Jordan Smallwood
  • 7. Blake Mack
  • 8. Jehu Chesson
  • 9. Marcus Kemp

WR Marcus Kemp Asserting Himself

Marcus Kemp had a good day on Sunday.

Kemp didn’t have a bad Saturday either. Here’s a beautiful long catch in traffic:

I Found My Thrill, On E. Berry Hill

Eric Berry had the day off to recuperate from a heel strain? Not sure why they can’t just say a particular player is taking a day of rest. What is sure is, Eric Berry is a mainstay of this team. DC Bob Sutton talked about Berry a couple of days ago:

Injury Report for Day 13

Three players left the field with injuries on Sunday:

  • Guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif – possible concussion
  • Nose tackle Xavier Williams – stinger
  • Running back Damien Williams – shoulder

“Someone’s in the Kitchen with…” Hitchens

Our own David Bell has traced the exposures and potentialities of the ILB corp over the past few years and we’ve now come to a place where it appears to be as solid as it’s been since perhaps the 1960s. The Anthony Hitchens signing was pooh-poohed by several national media types and with soft-injury holdout of Reggie Ragland to start camp, we haven’t been able to witness the full effect of their presence in the middle of the Chiefs defense, certainly not in preseason game one. However, that doesn’t mean they’re not getting some positive feedback in camp:

It’s not just Hitchens that’s receiving attention. The two of them together, Hitchens and Ragland, are beginning to catch some more attention.

Reggie Ragland had one of my favorite quotes from Training Camp this year:

“Don’t worry, we’re gonna stop that run…. We’re gonna stop it this year … the line, the wall is there.”

The two of them together on the field could end up being a potent pairing with as much potential for positive press as our new QB, Patrick. Sorry… got carried away with the p+p+p alliteration. Sometimes, ya just gotta go…. For those of you who are still unsatisfied with the run defense in Preseason Game One, remember this:

Talking About Future Dynamic Duos

Just think of it, two amazing pass rushers in their prime on the Chiefs… a guy can dream can’t he? However, if Breeland Speaks and Tanoh Kpassagnon break through this year or next, that’s exactly what could happen to the Chiefs up front:

My-oh-my… ain’t dat purdy?

Dandy Duel of the Day

I know that Tyreek Hill’s speed is going to make him very successful this season. His speed has also become a standard for other players, not only on the Chiefs, but around the league, to measure themselves against. That’s why I cheer for other CHIEFS players when they can beat him in camp… and here, Steven Nelson gets the better of him.

Tomorrow is the last day for Chiefs Training Camp in St. Joe. Go Chiefs!
