Chiefs Training Camp Day 3:

OPEN THREAD

by Laddie Morse

If Day 1 was the Day of Sammy Watkins, then Day 2 belonged to Tyreek Hill with two long passes caught from Super Arm Patrick Mahomes. Then following practice, Hill said he felt like his speed and and Mahomes arm were a match made in heaven… well, he sort of said that:

Here’s one of those long bombs for a TD from Mahomes-to-Hill:

Oh, and by the way, it’s perfectly fine with me if Tyreek Hill plays with a chip on his shoulder. Can you say, “Faster-than-fast?”

Mahomes-to-Hill: we should hear those named called out together many time this coming season as Hill has worked hard this offseason on his overall wide receiving skills. He reputation around the league is that of a speed demon . – the Cheetah — but Hill wants to be known as an all around excellent Wide Receiver so it should make for an exciting year!

Also on Friday, the Chiefs released a player,

That transaction had a number of fans believing they were about to sign another player… and that player might be CB Bashaud Breeland. Nope. As it turns out, the Chiefs went back to the well to sign veteran DL Mike Purcell. Purcell was signed by the Chiefs previously then released. However, Purcell wasn’t overly expensive. From sportract.com:

“Mike Purcell signed a 2 year, $1,350,000 contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, including an average annual salary of $675,000. In 2018, Purcell will earn a base salary of $630,000, while carrying a cap hit of $630,000.”

Consequently, I would expect Brett Veach to sign another DL or CB prior to the time the season begins, right after all other teams have cut their players. He’ll have the cash-on-hand to do it.

The Chiefs have done this two-stepping dance before and Purcell has no guarantee of making the final 53 but with little depth on the interior of the defensive line, he should end up doing more than sharing his knowledge and wisdom.

On the Injury Front, Kareem Hunt was held out of practice because of a nagging hammy he’s had since last season. The Chiefs are being overly-overly cautious with regards to injuries this year. Draft pick Safety Armani Watts has yet to see the Training Camp field because of a strained ankle. Reggie Ragland will likely be held out for the next week as the Chiefs remain cautious. You can expect to see a regular stream of veterans asked to sit a day during this training camp as Reid did with certain players last year.

Mahomes vs Amerson

Patrick Mahomes has made his fair share of completions but on this day it was good to see one of Brett Veach’s acquisitions come through with an INT, especially when that player is David Amerson. Amerson had a poor season with the Raiders in 2017 but I’m pulling for him to achieve a higher performance level than what we saw in Oakland. Intercepting Mahomes is a good start.

We have a long, long ways to go but it was interesting to see OLB Breeland Speaks out there starting witht he first team on day 1. Most draft picks were with the second team on day 2 but seeing Reid show faith in this rookie OLB was great.

WR Jordan Smallwood appears to be having a good camp so far. His 4.52 – 40 yard dash is very good for a man his size. It looks to me like he’d have to beat out Blake Mack for a spot.

Pads Are On Today
