Chiefs Training Camp Day 4:
OPEN THREAD
by Laddie Morse
Let’s begin with the Injury Report:
The only new injury came to Charcandrick West who is was hit in the helmet (head) area and may have a concussion. Andy Reid said:
“Charcandrick took a hit to the head. Rick [Burkholder, Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance] is evaluating him and we’ll just see where he’s at.”
Other injuries addressed by Andy Reid include:
- Reggie Ragland– “He’s making progress. I’m not worried about him. He’s going to be fine.”
- Kareem Hunt– “His hamstring just tightened up a bit on him and I don’t want to mess around with that. He had a sore hamstring during [OTAs] and I want to stay away from that. We’re easing him back in. He did some stuff early, then we just backed him off. I just don’t want to take any steps backwards on all of these guys coming off these injuries. He still got a lot of work in – some good conditioning work on the side.”
- Armani Watts– “He was back in today and got some work in. We’ll see how he does. Armani was a good college player, but we have to see [him on the field]. He needs reps and he has to be in there. If you’re going to make this thing… this team… you have to get in and show it.”
I mentioned yesterday that Reid would be overly cautious with his veterans returning from injuries so you can expect guys like Eric Berry and Chris Conley to be given days off to allow them extra recovery time. Conley explains why that time is needed:

The Patrick Mahomes Watch
It was a hardy day of hitting without any major injuries to report. The biggest takeaway from Day 3 was the up and down performance of QB Patrick Mahomes. I don’t want to make too big a deal of that because he’s just in his first week of running the offense with everyone on the field and he’s just finished his first day in pads: the only real simulation of a football game, when everyone is hitting and the action is live.
On the other hand, fans should expect this kind of performance from Patrick Mahomes. He may have one incredible half of football followed by a real doozy. That’s why you keep hearing Reid and Mahomes say they need to get him as many reps as possible to work out the kinks.
Run Defense Report
On Saturday the running game couldn’t find much room to run and that’s good news for the Chiefs run defense. While there may be a bit more focus on the passing game right now — because I think Reid intends on the passing game being this offense’s bread and butter — I also don’t think Reid designed the first day with pads on to feature a lot of running plays. It was said that Eric Bieniemy was not a happy camper which meant screaming could be heard from the bleachers. Now, I’m glad that Bieniemy is the new OC and that he is bringing his intensity to the whole offense, but what this really meant was… the run defense had a good day and a good day on the first day pads were on can only give the front 7 some well needed confidence.
Tremon Smith Getting Respect
I started following Charles Goldman on Twitter yesterday and he had some great tweets and insights as a Training Camp attendee. There’s nothing better than getting first hand knowledge about players in camp. With my current car problems I may not be able to make it out there for another week so getting the perspective of someone like Goldman has been insightful. Goldman likes him and I have already equated Smith to Richard Sherman by calling him Sherman-Lite. Here’s a tweet Goldman sent out about Tremon Smith last night, long after practice:
Tremon Smith really impressed me today. If he can sustain it, watch out. https://t.co/6P0XGgFu8r

David Amerson Update
CB David Amerson had another INT on Saturday. Should Amerson keep this up then no one will mind the Chiefs shipping Marcus Peters off to Los Angeles. However, we know this likely won’t continue but it bodes well for a defense in need of quality corner back play. Let’s hope he keeps this up.
Kendall Fuller is Guuuud
BJ Kissel shared a short video of Kendall Fuller in coverage after practice was over. It’s no wonder that some have called him the best slot-corner in the league.
#Chiefs CB Kendall Fuller…a good football player.
Here’s a look at one of his 1-on-1 reps against Sammy Watkins earlier today. Fantastic play. #ChiefsCamp pic.twitter.com/utg3orNNhh

After today’s practice, the Chiefs will return on Monday morning at 9:15 AM, take Tuesday off, then be back on the field again on Wednesday morning at 8:15 AM. Go Chiefs!
