Patty Takes: The Mahomes Watch

Patrick Mahomes went 20-32 on Day 4, a 62.5 completion percentage rate, and threw for… a lot of yards. BTW, they don’t actually keep track of “yards thrown” in camp but, it’s important to note he also threw 2 INTs. However, Mahomes didn’t disappoint on this day throwing several passes into tight windows and there was also a bomb to his new favorite receiver: Sammy Watkins.

That wasn’t the only beautiful pass thrown by sweetness:

Wait One Tanoh-second

On Day 4, you could say it was “Tanoh Kpassagnon’s Break Out Day.” If we get this TK during the season, watch out! KPass had a sack on Sunday but one of the questions a lot of people have about this 6-foot-7, 290 pound freakish man of steal is: can he drop back in coverage. Well, take a look:

Tanoh Kpassagnon looked good running the ball after his INT too. Maybe if Andy Reid wants to run an updated version of Hungry Pig… he could get “Tanoh to Tote the Rock.”

It wasn’t just one INT that got everyone’s attention for Kpass.

Another OLB who is gaining praise is rookie Breeland Speaks. On Saturday evening’s weekly TV presentation called “Chiefs Kingdom” Brett Veach spoke of Speaks athletic ability. Early in Sunday’s practice, with the rain coming down, Speaks dropped into coverage and had an excellent pass defensed:

Houston vs the Weakest Link

Justin Houston has become even more of a leader of this team. He shared an obvious reference to players no longer on the team, and how the team has progressed: “I love how we’re growing. There’s no hothead guys. It’s just everybody is on the same page.” This year’s coaches — and now Houston too — are talking about “The Weakest Link” approach to rushing the passer.

This means the Chiefs have made several moves this offseason to make sure their pass rush is improved:

  • 1) Kpass has developed
  • 2) Breeland Speaks was drafted
  • 3) Justin Houston has totally healed
  • 4) Reid & Sutton schemed (decided to use) the weakest link

The Texans have been doing this with J.J. Watts for years so I’m a bit surprised it took this long to have them use Justin Houston this way. It makes sense to have Justin going up against the other team’s weakest offensive lineman but relies upon all their other players to do their role well. It makes sense that they’d think of this too by the mere fact that Breeland Speaks has been doing the same at Ole Miss.

Reconstruction of the Defensive Backfield

David Amerson didn’t have another INT on Day 4, but did show his coverage skills on Travis Kelce.

Steven Nelson had an INT and Kendall Fuller showed why he’s one of the league’s best cover men:

Rookies corners Arrion Springs and Tremon Smith are both progressing well and making an impact.

CB Tremon Smith also made an impression returning punts which is something he didn’t have a lot of experience doing in college (251 total return yards).

Arrion Springs made enough plays to get noticed and supported too:

I’ve said before that Tremon Smith reminds me of Richard Sherman and tabbed him Sherman-Lite but if both he and Arrion Springs make the roster, then the Chiefs will be cutting some other names that a lot of roster prognosticators have making the team. However, they both made the list when Ransom Hawthorne constructed his early Roster Projections on Saturday.

The Chiefs will be off tomorrow but back on Wednesday morning at 8:15 AM. Go Chiefs!
