Chiefs Training Camp Day 7:

OPEN THREAD

Patty Takes: Mahomes in Motion

The Chiefs second year QB Patrick Mahomes threw… 2 1/2 … INTs on Wednesday. You see, it wasn’t 3 like many are reporting… and it wasn’t just two either. What happened was, the defense jumped off sides and so Mahomes knew he had a free play… so he threw an INT… which didn’t count. So, essentially, there were 3 INTs but technically, there weren’t. The problem is, we all know he threw another INT so you can go with three if you want… or two, if you’re in denial.

The point that should be recalled about this day is… Patrick Mahomes didn’t have his best stuff on but many fans still ooh-ed and ahh-ed over his longer throws and tight window winners. Patrick Mahomes said, he hopes to get all these mistakes out of the way so they don’t happen during the season but I think you can count on there being one of these types of days every now and again. It’s probably a good idea to remember that.

One of the other INTs was near the goal line and Mahomes could have run it in but chose to flip it ahead and it was intercepted as well. When he spoke to Reid about it, Reid said, “Well, why didn’t you go ahead and run it in?”.Now that seems like a fixable mistake so we shouldn’t see that one again.

Ashton to Ashton, Dust to Dust

CB Ashton Lampkin was waived on Wednesday to make room on the roster for ILB Otha Peters. That much we know for sure. However, Matt Derrick clears up his status at the time he was waived:

Another 24 hours, Ashton clears waivers… and I expect to see his name back on the Chiefs IR list.

You Can’t Dash Cam Erving’s Hopes

It looks like… so far… that Cam Erving is the new Left Tackle moving forward. Yes, Reid likes to slip and slide many different players in and out of different positions, and God only knows Erving has seen his share of positions changes, but he’s been penciled in with the first team for several days now and he’s looking good in that role.

Erving was quoted as saying, “I’ve wanted to be great since I was drafted.” Boy, oh boy, the Chiefs could sure use a “great” Left Guard so… here’s hoping it all works out!

Attention: May I Have YourAttention Please!

Anthony Hitchens is doing a wonderful job. With all the attention that Reggie Ragland has been getting — because of his absence — and the attention that Ukeme Eligwe has gotten — because of a foot strain — Hitchens has quietly gone about his business of tackling everything in sight.

It should be noted that UDFA – ILB, Ben Neiman, has done a bang-up job since he’s gotten an opportunity to run with the first team wolves… in the absence of Ragland or Eligwe. Could an all-Iowa ILB pairing be in the Chiefs future?

Dandy Duel of the Day

The winner of the Dandy Duel of the Day is Chris Conley when he went up against Arrion Springs and ended up with a catch and eventually springing free for what would have been a long gain. Still, rookie UDFA – CB Arrion Springs out of Oregon mirrored Conley as well as you could expect any veteran corner to mirror him and if they ran this route again, I’d expect Springs to come away with the victory.

Knock, Knock, Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door

By the time I get to Phoenix, all the Chargers will be in the hospital. TE Hunter Henry had taken over the Alpha dog position for tight ends last year so in the offseason, the Chargers decided not to bring back future Hall of Famer, Antonio Gates. The next thing you know, Hunter Henry is out (ACL) for the season with an injury. Then, UDFA – TE Austin Roberts has a season ending knee injury. Next, DB Jason Verrett goes down with an Achilles injury… for the year and recently, standout CB Trevor Williams goes down with a leg injury (although in may not be season ending, reportedly a mild ankle strain). Let’s thank our lucky stars in heaven that the injury bug has been light on the Chiefs this year… so far. Knock, knock, knockin’ on heavens door!

The Safety Monitor

I have to agree with Kent Swanson on his choices for the 5 possible Safeties so far in to camp: Berry, Sorenson, Murray, Golden and Watts. They all looked good so far in this camp;

Who do you think the Chiefs will keep, assuming they keep 5 Safeties?
