Day Two of the Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp practice is upon us and if it is as eventful as day one… we’ll need a day off just to take a breather. So let’s review what happened yesterday.
Everyone was there for the first practice… of wait… but Tamba Hali was not present when practice started and there was no sign of him. It made for an odd beginning to this training camp because of his Twitter tirade over the weekend which mostly focused on his wanting to be on the field more… play more… and that he was the one who was always at practice and so everyone else should be too.
The next surprise was that freshly signed Bryan Witzmann was lining up with the first team OL at left guard. Not Zach Fulton. Not Jah Reid… and certainly not Parker Ehinger — who is on the PUP list to begin camp — so that was an early zinger.
Ramik Wilson lined up next to DJ on the first team defense and that looked right. The real surprise of the day was that the Chiefs… and new GM Brett Veach… made a roster move by trading away Pro Bowl Special Teamer DJ Alexander to Seattle for ILB Kevin Pierre-Louis. Andy Reid pointed out after practice that Seattle has such a good linebacking pair in Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright that Pierre-Louis might be pretty good. and be able to make an impact for the Chiefs.
The second string offense featured Tyler Bray at QB. That was no surprise to me but perhaps a disappointment to the masses. Fans of Patrick Mahomes II shouldn’t worry though, he’ll get some reps with the first team some where along the line during this camp.
After about an hour Tamba Hali showed up on a golf cart. He made a statement afterwards explaining himself and his weekend tweets. Both Eric Berry and Justin Houston said they’d spoken with Tamba and said they have no problems with him and that they knew he meant well.
Well into practice, Eric Berry had the first pick of the day and it was off of Patrick Mahomes.
If you want to read more about day one of camp, Laurels and limitations, Chiefly Bacon and I all re-tweeted the biggest moments of camp and you can read those tweets and comments here.
