Chiefs v Texans: Sunday Night Football Open Thread

With the Los Angeles Raiders winning today, the AFC West can maintain their position as one of the best divisions in the NFL. The Raiders are, as of this moment, losing to the Baltimore Ravens (24-10) in Oakland but, if they lose, it should not effect the high standard for the AFC West teams because their QB, Derek Carr, is out with an injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs are up against an up-and-coming rookie quarterback in the Texans, Deshaun Watson. Watson has started the past 3 games for the Texans going 74 of 114 for a 64.9% completion percentage. While that doesn’t seem so very unbeatable, the problematic part of Watson’s game is his ability to run. He has 148 yards on 19 rushing attempts including a 49 yarder. When his pocket breaks down, he’s more than capable of breaking off big runs and keeping drives alive. Comparing him to Alex Smith: Smith has 18 rushes this season for 89 yards and he’s thought to be one of the best running QBs in the league.

Some believe that this game should not be as much of a challenge as the Redskins game. If the Chiefs front seven is not able to put enough pressure on Deshaun Watson, that may be the story of this game. However, the Chiefs offense is not the same offense as in year’s past. Period. It’s much improved. Alex Smith, for whatever reasons (the presence of Patrick Mahomes, the desire to stay a Chiefs starter the rest of his career, or who knows what) is having a career year and couple that with a rookie running back in Kareem Hunt who is setting records and becomes a focal point for defenses to stop, and Tyreek Hill whose speed must be accounted for in every moment he’s on the field, plus Travis “I’m an emotional guy” Kelce who can change the momentum of a game in one big play at any time… and this Chiefs offense will be a tough matchup for the Texans defense… with Watt or not.
