Chiefs: What They Think and What Was Said

Wanya Morris

Wanya Morris says playing with his teammates is a “Dream come true…” (0:30):

.

.

John Ross

Andy Reid said this about John Ross before he retired: “He didn’t say much . . . I’m sure he was frustrated.” when he packed and left the Chiefs facilities after retiring this past week.

.

Joe Thuney

On the progress of LT Donovan Smith and RT Jawaan Taylor:

.

“Yeah, it’s going well, Jawaan and Donovan are great. They are really hard workers, getting in that play book, very detail orientated guys [and] work really hard. It’s been a great group to be a part of, the coaching staff has done a great job just getting them details and – so yeah, it’s been going really well.”

.

Charles Goldman

Goldman has been a writer for Chiefs Wire but said this recently:

.

“Justin Watson has seen more first-team repetitions during #Chiefs training camp in 11-on-11 team drills than any other receiver not named Skyy Moore and MVS.”

.

It’s good to get an early handle on the Wide receiver situation… meaning, who’s in and who’s out. Goldman’s note is telling.

.

Nick Jacobs

“Running back Jerrion Ealy with a strong showing today [Sat.] in pass pro, run and catching out of the backfield” (0:39):

.

.

.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire

CEH on Andy Reid’s long drive sets:

.

“I never really look at is as, ‘Oh this is something that’s like punishment.’ I know I gotta go out there and whenever my number’s on the play I go out there and run it. I don’t typically look at it as long drive drill is something that’s challenging. I mean if a drive on the field is 23 plays you gotta go out there and do it. So, I don’t really think about it like that I just kind of put the pads on and roll.”

Dave Toub

On whether or not the Chiefs would be “fair catching” the ball on kickoffs:

.

“We’re not going to fair catch.”

.

Toub has also announced that UDFA rookie RB Deneric Prince would be given the first shot at returning K.O.s in the first preseason game against the Saints. Dave Toub has also said the top gunners as of right now are WR Justin Watson and CB Joshua Williams… and if Nazeeh Johnson was not injured he’d be the first gunner up.

.

.

Trent McDuffie

Trent McDuffie speaks on the defensive backfield:

.

“We know [we’ve] got guys who will make plays. We can cover. We can play the zone. We can blitz the quarterback. [But] a big thing for us is just getting that ball back. I think that’s something that this defense is really going to hone in on: just making sure we don’t give up on any play.”

.

Justin Reid

Reid has said there is a night and day difference in this years defensive backfield compared to last season:

.

.

Andy Reid

Reid on Ekow Boye-Doe:

.

“Yeah, he’s doing a nice job, he’s really doing a nice job. So, we’ll see how he did today, but he’s been getting better every day, challenging. Told him he’s got to eat a little bit, he’s kind of thin, but he’s a heck of a competitor and he’s got good skill.”

.

While that may sound like a supportive statement from Andy Reid, it also sounds like a HC getting ready to depart with a DB. I like EBD but think he’s going to be cut at the end of August, or before the regular season gets under way.

.

Matt McMullen

The Chiefs beat reporter summarizes the practice for the Chiefs on Saturday:

.

“An emphasis for the offense on Saturday was clearly the screen game. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes executed a number of creative screen passes during the session, which included a remarkable behind-the-back pass that landed in the arms of wide receiver Skyy Moore.”

.

Personally, I hope PM never uses the “behind-the-back” pass. The risks are too high and I’d rather see a “hook-n-ladder” play if they’re going to do that type of thing. Hook-n-ladder? Think: Travis Kelce to LeSean McCoy.
