The Kansas City Chiefs finished the preseason 2-and-1 with a less than memorable 33-to-32 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday. The Chiefs QB who started the game on Saturday was Shane Buechele on 8 of 17 passing and he threw two INTs with one TD but came away with a 43.1 quarterback rating. Both Blaine Gabbert and Chris Oladokun came away with quarterback ratings that surpassed the 100 mar but the game was really decided by INTS with the Chiefs throwing three and the Browns throwing one.

David Bell and I were commenting after the game that the Wide Receiver group may end up being the hardest to whittle down. Ihmir Smith-Marsette had the best game out of anyone in that group yet his tape may end up on the editing room floor. It proves just how good this group of WRs has been this offseason and preseason. David Bell and I were recognizing that several other WRs may have a hard time making the final roster whether Reid keep 6 or 7.
.
Kadarius Toney is a lock
MVS is a lock
Rashee Rice is a lock (even though he dropped five (5) balls on Saturday)
Skyy Moore is a lock
.
That leaves two (maybe three) WR slots to be filled.
Justyn Ross is highly likely
Justin Watson is highly likely
Richie James is also highly likely
… but then that means keeping seven (7) wideouts. Of course, Kadarius Toney could be put on the 6 week IR list — as suggested by David — and the Chiefs could then put off any decision making they would have to do with a final listing. That also means these following WRs won’t be on the finale 53 man roster:
.
Ihmir Smith-Marsette (even though he had the best game out of all WRs on Saturday… as well as last week)
Nikko Remigio
Ty Fryfogle
Juwan Green
Jerrion Ealy
Cornell Powell
.
The third and last preseason game was an odd duck. Shane Buechele threw two early INTs leading to a short field and easy points for the Browns. They led at one point by the score of 22-to-3 and when Blaine Gabbert went into the game he didn’t make it any better by throwing an iNT which also led to Brownie points. Since the opportunity to start the game with Shane Buechele was wasted it allowed Gabbert to seemingly reassert himself as the leading #2 QB of the bunch.
I kept waiting for a DT to step forward and show the world that re-signing Chris Jones would be mandatory… but that never happened.
In eleven days, the Chiefs will face the Detroit Lions in Arrowhead and as many have foretold here at ArrowheadOne, that will not be an easy game. Another date to keep in mind is the NFL Cut Down Day which is coming right up this Tuesday, August 29th.
