Chiefs: Who Ya Gonna Call, 1-800-DEFENSE!

Chiefs: Who Ya Gonna Call, 1-800-DEFENSE! – I’m always hyped when the Red & Gold lineup against the Patriots. For almost two decades we’ve watched the Pats run roughshod over the NFL, accumulating a record-breaking six Lombardi Trophies. Bill Belichick is a master at game-planning, but unfortunately for the Patriots, Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid, along with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, are the antithesis of game-planning.

I’ll not lie, after the first half, I was scared. Not discouraged, mind you, but scared, nonetheless. You can’t do it. You can’t know what “they’re going to do next,” when they don’t know what they’re going to do next. I know that the Patriots wanted to win, planned to win, anticipated, and even expected to win. However, the best team in the NFL won. That would be the Kansas City Chiefs.

Patrick Mahomes: Chiefs quarterback threw 29 passes, true on 19 of them, for 236 yards and a touchdown.

As for the other team? They chose their backup quarterbacks. Brian Hoyer, Jarrett Stidham: both QBs failed them. In the first half QB, Hoyer completed fifteen passes out of 24 attempts for 130 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. His second-half replacement, Jason Stidham, connected 5 out of 13 times, with only one touchdown and 2 interceptions.

Yes, the Chiefs won ugly. I’ll take ugly. The key word is won. The Chiefs record is now 4-0. That is the first time, ever, that an NFL team has been 4-0, four straight times in a row. Ladies and gentleman, that’s your 2020 Kansas City Chiefs. I agree with all that, like the past few weeks, we won ugly-step-sister ugly. However, we won. Let’s roll with that.

How’d I Do?

Last week, I predicted the Chiefs to win easily (keep in mind, this is before I knew Cam Newton was out with COVID-19), 49-to-24. After much pondering, gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair, I’ve concluded that me predicting scores is akin to having Christopher Columbus map your route to India. Don’t trust it!

Looking Ahead

Next week, we have the Raiders. Despite me downgrading myself, above, trust me on this. Chiefs, 45-20.

Parting Shot

Today is National Coaches Day. While I’ve much respect for the likes of Andy Reid and Bill Belichick, I much more respect those unsung heroes who mentor the young that have little to no chance of making it the NFL. As a former JFL assistant coach and player, myself, I ask all to give just a moment to thank those who commit their extra hours to help better the kids that fill their neighborhoods. As for me? Thank you, Coach Harris, HC of the 1981 St. Louis, MO JFL NYA Redskins. Yes, sir, you made a difference. Almost 40 years later, I still remember. Thank you!
