Chiefs Win! Chiefs Win! Chiefs Win!

Laddie Morse

After trailing 24-to-14 at halftime, and with one of their TDs coming from a defensive player, the Kansas City Chiefs bounced back in a huge way in the second half of Super Bowl 57 and beat the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 38-to-35. With this victory, the Kansas City Chiefs have won 75 games over the last five seasons (including playoffs), which is one more than the 2014-18 New England Patriots and how many people are talking about that?

I have had some many friends and family contact me since the game ended, and that’s just been in the past hour. Now, I’m wondering what Tyreek Hill is thinking since he saw his old team win another Lombardi. Patrick Mahomes has won the Super Bowl MVP and he was the first QB to win that award in the same season that they won the league MVP Award.

The first stats that jump out at me are:

.

1. The Chiefs RBs had 158 yards rushing while the Eagles RBs had 115 yards.

2. Patrick Mahomes — even though his ankle was re-injured in the first half — had zero sacks against him.

.

The Chiefs and the Eagles vaunted defensive lines had a total of zero sacks. Yes, K.C. had two sacks on Jalen Hurts, but those came from unlikely players: Leo Chenal and Khalen Saunders.

The Eagles QB Jalen Hurts set a record by rushing for 3 TDs in this game, but that may end up being the Eagles ongoing dilemma. I’ve never been a huge fan of run-first QBs and to be sure, that is not what Patrick Mahomes is. Mahomes will runn if he needs to but moves in (and out) of the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield, and we’ve heard him say enough times that he beleives his job is to get the ball into the hands of hsi playmakers.

Andy Reid Retirement?

For some lame reason, there was a rumor started that Andy Reid was considering retirement. Well, let put that rumor to bed. He’s not! He said after last night’s game, and I quote: “If they’ll have me, I’m sticking around.” I can safely assume that the Chiefs still want him. So, let’s end this charade right here.

The Future of Eric Bieniemy

The future of OC Eric Bieniemy on the other hand, is a lot less certain. The Chiefs re-signed Bieniemy last year to a one-year deal, and it’s been rumored that he’s thinking about a lateral move to the Baltimore Ravens where he’d also serve as Offensive Coordinator. Then, he might be a more legitimate prospect for a Head Coaching position in the future. Well, that’s the idea anyway. The Washington Commanders have been mentioned as a possible landing spot for EB too, but if the Ravens were to offer him a deal, I think he’d be more interested in that job. In any event, if EB does take a position with another team, it means the Chiefs would be given an extra 3rd round pick this year and an extra 3rd round pick next year (both of the compensatory pick value, which comes at the end of the 3rd round).

You’ve Gotta Fight, For Your Right…

After the game, Travis Kelce, who four years ago coined the phrase “You’ve Gotta Fight, For Your Right, To Party” (song by the Beastie Boys) shouted the first half of that in his post-game interview, and gave the Chiefs crowd the chance to finish his sentence… which they did. More awesome moments by the best Tight End to ever wear a jersey.

General Manager Brett Veach

Some of you may be tired of the sickening number of times I mention the mastery of Brett Veach. I will admit he has missed on several very good players, both in free agency and in the draft, but he’s hit enough home runs while giving the coaching staff time to prepare his selections for the season, and especially the post-season. Which brings me to…

The Chiefs Coaching and Staff

From the Chiefs DB coaches Dave Merritt and Donald D’Alesio to DL coach Joe Cullen, to OL coach Andy Heck, all of hte Chiefs coaches deserve praise for their work this season. There’s just not better time to reap praise on their heads than when the team ins it all, and hauls home another Lombardi Trophy. The slight that national pundits do this team is perhaps felt nowhere more than in the coaches losker room. They really do a dis-service to the Chiefs coaches and trianign staff. Today is a great time to throw some light on them all. So, here’s who the Chiefs really are behind the scenes:

.

.

There are five more pages of Kansas City Chiefs employees like this. You have to believe they are all at home and celebrating. I hope it means that many of them are getting a raise this year. You’ll notice both Mitch Holthus (voice of the Chiefs) and Matt McMullen (team Reporter) and I only noticed them because they are the most known people on this list… and perhaps Mike Bradway (Senior Director of Player Personnel).

Favorite Moment of the Game

If I have a favorite moment of the game, it probably had to do with Harrison Butker’s game winning Field Goal leaving only 8 seconds remaining. I also loved to see the Chiefs second year linebacker Nick Bolton, have a “scoop-and-score” in the second quarter giving the Chiefs a score for the ages (tying it up at 14 apiece). The Chiefs may have been in trouble at the half and down by 24-to-14, but they came back in the second half and outscored the Eagles 24-to-11.

Dynasty Talk

Every time anyone starts the “Dynasty” talk, it makes me shiver. In the day and age of parody, and “on any given Sunday” it seems frivolous to start talking about a dynasty. Sure, Patrick Mahomes is likely to be mentioned with the greats of the game one day (he is already), but let’s ease up on the “Dynasty Talk”… for now.

Song of the Game

The song by Earth, Wind, and Fire called: “September seems like the most appropriate song here. Not only si is a great song of celebration but it emphasizes the month of the season when football is in the NFL is just starting up: September!
