Chiefs: Would You, Could You? 6.4.2020

Chiefs: Would You, Could You? 6.4.2020 – Like any other Chiefs fan at ArrowheadOne, I dream dreams about the Kansas City signing sensational Free Agents and as well as being able to re-sign their own sensational players… like Patrick Mahomes or Chris Jones. I also daydream of defensive designs dancing in my head creating a tsunami of endless sacks followed by more sacks.

Si Señor… I have spent mucho time in the land of “What ifs-ville”… like, I used to think about… what if the Chiefs had not drafted Todd Blackledge and instead drafted almost ANYONE else?  So, let’s do some more positive positing.

Would You, Could You… accept that the Chiefs “undefeated” players are movable pieces?

We all know that the NFL is a business. That may be exactly what keeps a wonderful player, and person, like DT Chris Jones from staying a Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman for the course of his career. However, there are other players who might be moved to make room for Daddy… err, CJ.

ArrowheadPride published a piece recently called, “Five Chiefs going into their contract year in 2020” and showed that the following Chiefs are in the final year of their deal:

  • DL – Tanoh Kpassagnon
  • OC Austin Reiter
  • LB Damien Wilson
  • Safety Daniel Sorensen
  • RB Damien Williams

Their article doesn’t mention this but the base salaries for those players in 2020 are:

  • $1,029,257 – Tanoh Kpassagnon
  • $ 630,000 – Austin Reiter
  • $3,200,000 – Damien Wilson
  • $3,600,000 – Daniel Sorensen
  • $1,850,000 – Damien Williams

The article at AP quotes Terez Paylor who once said, “The contract year is undefeated” and while I tend to agree with that sentiment, mostly, one or two of these players could be moved, as in traded, to get enough cap relief to re-sign Chris Jones… if the numbers match up in terms of value (what CJ is asking and what the Chiefs are willing to play). Daniel Sorensen was an indispensable cog in the Chiefs playoff run and Super Bowl victory. However, if the Chiefs can get a draft pick for him, he can be replaced with the players the Chiefs already have on the roster.

Would You, Could You… accept someone who isn’t like you or doesn’t believe like you?

I normally have used a feature banner called, “Vacuum Off” in order to air non-football related issues but I will use our current forum to make a statement about my official stance for ArrowheadOne: on racism. Here’s what I said recently on Twitter:

Maybe I should have said, “If we don’t, we create a groundhog-day living-nightmare.” While I grew up with Christian values and beliefs, I have come to know so many families who don’t believe as I do… and I have learned to accept and respect those people. Does that mean I have abandoned my own faith and beliefs? Not in the least. In fact, one of the tenants I have attempted to live by is: “In asmuch as you have done to the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.” In other words, treat others the way you want to be treated. Ah yes… the golden rule.

Four years ago next month, ArrowheadOne began. In that same month, I asked an ex-student of mine named Angela Terrell to address racism (because of racism problems our American society was having at that time). Although I taught Angela in first grade in the early 1990s, she reconnected with me on Facebook ten years ago and now she is seeking a degree in writing. Angela also says she and her mother still pray for me often. While it’s a gift from above to know I had a positive impact on at least one student’s life, we submitted her piece here on AO and I will quote her again and allow her words to stand as my own position as well:

“I don’t fight for race, I fight for what’s right and anytime I hear someone running down a group of people or an individual, I address it. I use moments like those as teaching tools to diffuse and educate to clear up any skewed misconceptions any student may have with a particular group of people…. Don’t forget we are all individuals who just so happen to make up a group, a culture and finally a society. We should all ask ourselves what kind of society we want to become, because what we have sure isn’t working.”

Would You, Could You… See Breeland Speaks Balling Out in 2020?

USAToday recently put out a piece by Mitch Carney called, “Five Chiefs With Something to Prove in 2020” and chief among those mentioned was Breeland Speaks. Carney speaks of Speaks,

“After being the Chiefs’ top pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Speaks has struggled to find a role in the defense. The defensive end was unable to get much playing time his rookie year, playing out of position as an outside linebacker. He was finally moved back to his natural position, playing hand-in-the-dirt defensive lineman in 2019, but was injured in the preseason, missing the entire 2019 season and Super Bowl run. If Speaks continues to struggle to get on the field, especially early in training camp, he could be cut before the start of the season and remembered as a bust.”

I tend to agree with David Bell who is still open to the idea that Breeland Speaks will do more than just show up in 2020. Here’s what Bell said in one of his pieces this Spring:

“Keep in mind that the Chiefs have DE Breeland Speaks in the background, returning from injury. He was no slouch player himself (mis-cast as an 34 OLB).”

Although Speaks was hurt almost as soon as he showed to training camp last year, and even though he’s not adapted well in either Bob Sutton’s 3-4 or Steve Spagnuolo’s 4-3… none of that should fall on his shoulders. Speaks has a great upside and it would be unwise to jettison a second round value before we find out just how good he could be in Spags system.

Would You, Could You… give me a Cheeseburger today, if I Gladly Pay You on Tuesday?

Wimpy Wellington, from Popeye, kind of reminds you of Andy Reid doesn’t he? Well, Scott Van Pelt at ESPN was interviewing Reid recently and asking about how he personally celebrated the Super Bowl victory. Van Pelt asked, “What’s the most satisfying piece that you’ll allow yourself to enjoy personally?” Reid’s response:

The Cheeseburger was phenomenal!”

Van Pelt laughed of course, then Reid added,

No, it was a great… it was great to win the game… tremendous. To see the smiles on those kids faces [assuming he meant his players]. Guys doing snow angels with little trophy confetti dropping down on the field… the opportunity to stand up there with Terry Bradshaw and the Commissioner… I mean, how great is that?

The Andy Reid celebration I can really believe? Cheeseburger! Cheeseburger!
