Chiefs: You Don’t Tug on Superman’s Cape
by Phillip Maxwell
You don’t tug on Superman’s cape
You don’t spit into the wind
You don’t pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger
And you don’t mess around with HIM!
There have been thousands of players throughout the years in sports that were just absolutely phenomenal athletes. We have all grown up watching them, guys and girls, that stood out above the rest, from pee wee sports on up to the pros.
They fill up the rosters of professional sports teams all over the world… but… that isn’t who I want to focus on today. There is a much smaller elite group amongst these thousands of athletes that is on an entirely different playing field. A select group that takes it to the next level. Another tier if you will.
Sayings like “Always Clutch” or “Cool Under Pressure” were created to describe this select group of individuals. Creative nicknames are often used as terms of endearment, to praise these people.
With the game on the line, opposing teams or individuals, never wanted to see the basketball in Michael Jordan’s hands… or the football coming from Joe Montana’s arm… or the bat being swung by Reggie Jackson… or having Serena Williams staring you down from the other side of the net.
It’s because these players weren’t just your average dangerous players. No. They were at their most dangerous in the closing seconds with the game on the line: Jordan at the buzzer, Montana inside the 2 minute warning, Jackson in the bottom of the 9th in October, and Williams at game-point-match.
The Chiefs struggled in Detroit and nobody saw it coming. Not the fans, not the announcers and not the talking heads of sports. This was supposed to be an easy W. A lopsided affair but, nobody told the Lions. They brought a smashmouth defensive game with them. Plus, an offensive aerial attack that put the Chiefs on their heels throughout the game.
I’m not entirely sure that if not for a couple of lucky breaks, the Chiefs head home with their tails between their legs.

With a little over 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter, the Lions got the ball back down by 4.
Now up to this point in the game, nothing indicated the Chiefs defense was going to be able stop them. Stafford was simply having his way with the K.C. secondary and sure enough, he came through one last time when he connected with WR Golladay for the TD with 2:20 left on the clock. That ultimately put the Lions up by 3, after the extra point was made.
Now see, therein lies the problem: the Lions simply scored too soon and left the door wide open for the Chiefs to make a comeback.
I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that I was nervous and my gut was wrenching about. However, I’d also be lying if I told you I wasn’t 100% confident that Patrick Mahomes wasn’t going to convert on the 4th and long to keep the game alive, because… Mahomes is Mahomes… and I just knew he was going to do it.
I felt it in my bones because that’s what these rare breed of players do, they take the situation and put it on their back and find a way to win.
We have waited a long time for this kind of QB.
Montana had that magic, and he almost got us there. Unfortunately, he was toward the end of his playing career when he graced Red and Gold and his body just couldn’t pull it off anymore . We suffered through some very dark times with names like Cassel, Thigpen and Huard.
Alex Smith, bless his heart, and I’m grateful for his time in Kansas City but, he didn’t possess the magic either. Patrick Mahomes does. Patrick Mahomes is one of those rare breed of players Kansas City fans, I’m telling you. He has that magic.
Here is Patrick Mahomes' game-winning drive against the Detroit Lions.
Maybe the least flashy, most surgical thing he's ever done.

If you put the ball back in his hands, late in the 4th quarter of a close game, as Matt Patricia and the Detroit Lions did on Sunday, he is going to burn you every time and that’s exactly what he did on Sunday in Detroit. So, I say again…
“You don’t tug on Superman’s cape!”
