Come Home, Alex!

Come home, Alex!

I was so looking forward to watching the documentary on Alex Smith, Episode 60, Project 11. I watched all of five minutes. I could do no more. It tore at my soul.

You have to understand me. I’m a Chiefs fan since the Joe Montana years. He brought me here. You, Chiefs Kingdom, kept me here. I went through that 2-14 season in 2012, but remained a Chief. It was hard, but it was right.

Bring on 2013. We had a new head coach, Andy Reid, along with a new quarterback, Alex Smith. Mr. Smith, castoff from the 49ers, was an anomaly to me. I knew not what to make of this dude. I know now. He, and Big Red, absolutely revived my faith in our beloved Chiefs! All of a sudden, we were for real! A force and a team to be feared. That happened! It was awesome, and it was all because of Coach Reid and Mr. Smith!

So, back on point, after watching the first five minutes of the ESPN documentary on Mr. Smith and seeing the Joe Theismann-like injury to our quarterback — yes, I know that he has a Redskins jersey on, but that man is a Chief! — I stopped the show. I just can’t. It’s painful to me. I dig that dude!

I oft-times get into arguments with fellow NFL and Chiefs fans about Alex. They will belittle me with claims that Alex did nothing to make Patrick Mahomes the great quarterback that he is. My argument is that they are right. Patrick Mahomes would and will be a great quarterback without Alex Smith. However, Mr. Mahomes would not have become a great quarterback as soon as he did without the mentoring and tutelage of a certain veteran QB named Alex Smith.

I did not watch the documentary, Alex. I could not. Please, forgive me. I read the reviews, however. I know that you’ve overcame much. Seventeen surgeries! Almost lost your life! Almost lost your leg! The gig is up. I’ve no doubt that you can come back and be a quarterback in the NFL. I just don’t want you to. I want you home, safe and secure in the confines of Chiefs Kingdom, roaming the sidelines in a sharp Chiefs polo, tapped off with a crisp Chiefs cap. That’s what I wish for you, Mr. Alex.

I can’t speak for Coach Reid, but I know that he’d welcome you. I can, and will, speak for Chiefs Kingdom. We want you. We love you. We welcome you. You may don that ugly Redskins jersey, but you are a Chief, through and through. Come home, Mr. Smith, to One Arrowhead Way. You know, that house you help rebuild.
