Conference Championships: OPEN THREAD

It’s Lamar Hunt Trophy day and once again Lamar Hunt’s team is missing. In 1970, the year the Kansas City Chiefs won their only Super Bowl victory, the AFC Conference Champion was to forever be named after the Chiefs owner, and AFL League founder, Lamar Hunt. Since Baltimore won the first Lamar Hunt Trophy following the 1970-71 season, in the 48 years since that time, K.C. has appeared in that game once following the 1993 season with Joe Montana at the helm, but never won their own award.

From 1970 to 1993 the Chiefs never even threatened the possibility of getting to that game. Since that time, they’ve had several teams who were seeming good enough, with nary a happy ending. After 5 seasons with Andy Reid guiding the ship, the team often appears more stuck on Gilligan’s island with Alan Hale Jr. leading the way… than headed for the promise land with Christopher Columbus.

While the Chiefs have put together a formidable offensive attack with a 4,000 yard passer… and a league leading rusher… and the best TE in the game with multiple 1,000 yard seasons under his belt… and the fastest WR in the NFL who also has has a 1,000 yard receiving season… their defense has fallen off the map. With the Chiefs two weeks into their offseason, coaches have already come and gone however, their own Defensive Coordinator is still in tact with what looks like less and less of a chance that he’ll be fired as each day passes.

The AFL Conference Championship featuring Jacksonville v New England, begins at 2:00 PM CDT today while  NFC Conference Championship gets started at 5:40 PM CDT. I’m going with the Jags and the Eagles in the Super Bowl and the last team I want to see make it to the SB is New England… really… it’s time to move on from the dynasty days of Tom Brady. so, who are you going with or cheering for?
