Denver On “Lock” Down: Chiefs Corral Broncos, 43-16

Denver On “Lock” Down: Chiefs Corral Broncos, 43-16 – Last week, I called the inclement weather in Buffalo, where the Chiefs Out-buffaloed the Bills, 26-17, “perfect fall football weather.” I must have angered the gridiron gods, for they outdid themselves this week in Denver, Colorado with light snow, fog, and a wind chill of 1° Fahrenheit. That, ladies and gentleman, is perfect football weather… provided you’re not a fan in the stands.

Fret not. There was only a limited crowd of 5,700 fans, most of them Bronco believers. No loss there. Misery loves company.

View from the Cheap Seats

Miserable they were. Not from the usual suspect, Patrick Mahomes, however. Truth be told, last year’s Super Bowl MVP could have sat on the sideline, and the Chiefs would still have won this game.

No, yesterday’s victory resulted from a multitude of heroes: OC Eric Bieniemy, DC Steve Spagnuolo, ST coach Dave Toubs, and ultimately, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, chief among them. There was no unit on the field for the Chiefs that cold, snowy Sunday that could not score.

Yesterday’s win marks the first time this year that the Chiefs have even come close to resembling that Championship team that ran roughshod over the league last year… and, just think, they didn’t even need Patrick Mahomes to do it!

The stats speak for themselves:

NFL teams: Be afraid, be very afraid.

Stat of the Game – Passer Rating

  • Patrick Mahomes – 107.2%
  • Chad Henning – 93.8%
  • Drew Lock – 57.7%

Game Song: Thunder – Imagine Dragons

I readily admit that I stole the idea for today’s Game Song from fellow ArrowheadOne writer, David Bell, based on his excellent piece from Saturday afternoon, Thunder and Lightning: From the Air and Ground. Yesterday’s football clinic that the Chiefs put on display in Denver featured both thunder and lightning, plus weather anomalies we’ve yet seen in our world. However, it is 2020. Pretty much anything’s possible.

… and the Game Ball Goes to …

I’ve got to give it to “Dirty Dan” Sorenson. I ignored him and his contributions altogether last week, but he proved his worth today, and I’m sorry I was so dismissive last week. However, Honey Badger is worthy as well, having snagged an INT too. I think Tyrann Mathieu oft-times forgoes glory to let his teammates shine. Today, at ArrowheadOne, all of them shined.

How’d I Do?

I rocked! I predicted a 49-27, Chiefs victory and while I was off by a few points, it was the right idea. I’ll take it and (falsely?) claim victory. After all, the Patriots got away with such for almost twenty years in the NFL!

Editor’s Note: that last line had me gut laughing!

Looking Ahead

Next week, we face the forlorn 0-7 New York Jets in Arrowhead Stadium. However, it’s 2020, and anything’s possible.

Who am I kidding?! It could be the Twilight Zone, and the Chiefs still win. Big time! Chiefs pull out a 42-0 victory next Sunday at noon, CST (remember to set your clock back one hour on Saturday night before bed), to mark their first shutout this season.
