Day One Is In the Books
Unsurprisingly, Brett Veach traded up to make a draft pick at #21. The player? Trent McDuffie, CB, Washington. The way the draft unfolded was surprising after pick #12. Veach’s trade to move up was to ensure that the Chiefs obtained a starter-type player on defense. I am not going to give this pick an A-type grade. B+ maybe. I don’t think it surprising that this move was made. Veach traded picks #29, #94, and #121 to make the move. That is a trade with a cost but a benefit via the chosen player. Remaining in round one, Brett Veach still has pick #30.
At this juncture, I am waiting on round one to complete. Pick #30 is very important, and I am mystified about which way it goes. Stand By! When the pick arrived, I was disappointed because the Chiefs chose George Karlaftis. I am not enamored with this pick at all. If anything, Larlaftis was drafted because of Spagnuolo – George is a power Rusher and possesses the size, arm length, and weight that fits the Chief’s profile. On the other hand? Karlaftis may have a great “get-off,” but his game is based on power – straight ahead, bullrush. He is not agile. He does not have quick feet, nor does he have lateral moves. I will grade this as a “C”; I don’t like this draft pick. Enough said is probably too much. Suffice it to say that Pick #30 is a disappointment for me. Prove me wrong, Chiefs!
So Okay? I may be wrong, and the Chief’s coaching staff may be the answer. Old quote: “Never try to teach a pig to sing. It’s difficult to do and annoy’s the pig.”
