Five Moves Brett Veach Should Consider – I know the Chiefs are working under the #Runitback mantra this offseason but when you can make your team better, why not? In recent years, whenever a player has fallen out of favor with their team, it seems that the Kansas City Chiefs GM, Brett Veach, has made a deal to bring that player to Kansas City. Consider linebacker Reggie Ragland or Charvarius Ward. Of course it doesn’t always work out as Reggie Ragland is no longer with the team and Darron Lee who was acquired from New York Jets in May of 2019 in exchange for a 2020 6th-round draft pick never really saw the field. However, that doesn’t seem to stop Veach from trying and trading, again, and again. Remember that whenever Willie Gay makes a big play this year because… it’s because Veach shipped Dee Ford to the 49ers for their 2nd round pick, with which he turned around and drafted Mr. Gay!
5. Trade for LB
Haason Reddick
Trade a 5th round 2021 pick to the Arizona Cardinals for LB Haason Reddick. Reddick was the 13th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and for some reason he’s not being given much of a chance to prove himself on the field in Arizona. They’ve even drafted a LB who would presumably replace him in Isaiah Simmons. If the Chiefs want to bolster their LB corps and build it up for the future, Reddick could be the guy to help make that happen.
Cody Benjamin of CBSSports.com has a piece out that suggests that the Carolina Panthers trade a conditional 5th round pick to the Cards for Reddick. If Panthers can make that happen, so can Veach.
4. Sign Free Agent
CB Logan Ryan
Sign Free Agent CB Logan Ryan asap.asap. Yes, Ryan is coming off of a 3-years for $30M deal with the Titans but f he can be had for say, $8M on a one-year deal, Veach should try and make this happen. Ryan, who was once a New England Patriot, slammed the door shut on Tom Brady’s career with a short and sweet pick-6 to close out their divisional game in January. He was originally drafted by the Pats in 2013 and played for them for four seasons, 2013 to 2016. An eventual (because of Breeland’s impending suspension) defensive backfield of Ryan, Breeland and Ward as the primary starters could be one of the best around, especially when you take injuries into consideration. Plus, it gives young upstarts like Rashad Fenton, Alex Brown, L’Jarius Sneed, Bopete Keyes, Javarius Davis, Lavert Hill and others time to develop.
3. Trade WR
Demarcus Robinson
Trade Demarcus Robinson to the Packers for picks. By trading Demarcus Robinson to the Packers for draft picks the Chiefs would essentially be getting something for nothing and not be any worse for the wear. Byron Pringle and a host of other up and coming WRs on the roster could fill in for DRob who will be gone in a year anyway. Plus, with WR Kalija Lipscomb (pictured) coming through as a UDFA the Chiefs could make space for a possible rising star. In the meantime, the Packers may be willing to deal picks for a Super Bowl winning wideout to give Aaron Rodgers a target they didn’t pick up in the draft.
2. Sign QB
Colin Kaepernick
Sign Free Agent QB Colin Kaepernick to a two-year nominal deal. While this appears to be a socially appropriate motivated move, it is not. Andy Reid is known as the QB whisperer — whether that’s true or not — and he could not only help jump start Kap’s stalled out career but give Brett Veach some leveraging power if he can swing a trade for him down the line. Kap gets into a few games and shows he’s still got the juice — mostly in the preseason — and Reid uses his QB voodoo to bring in more draft picks for Veach in an inevitable trade. Reid is also known for his willingness to forget the past, as with Michael Vick (not that Kap needs any forgiving whatsoever… in fact, we should be thanking him) — and although I am in no way comparing Kap to Vick — it could end up being a real coup for the Chiefs… and Kaepernick. With, the Chiefs, and Reid, shining a bright light for the world to see.
1. Trade LDT & Dirty Dan for OG Brandon Scherff
Trade Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Daniel Sorensen to Washington for OG Brandon Scherff. Daniel Sorensen is due to make $4.75M this year and he is ready to be replaced by third year man Armani Watts. LDT had a down year and is scheduled to make $7.75M in 2020 then his contract is up like Sorensen’s. Scherff’s contract is also up after 2020, but he is one of the best OGs in the league. Although he would be probably work out to be a hired gun, he could definitely help protect Mr. Franchise — PMII — for the next year and increase the Chiefs shot at another Super Bowl. While Sorensen’s and LDT’s contracts equal $12.5M and Scherff is due, $15M this year, the Chiefs would have to come up with another $2.5M, but it seems doable, all things considered. An OL of Scherff, Schwartz, Fisher and whoever else Reid can fill the two other positions with… could be a great OL.
