Head Coach Opportunities: Eric Bieniemy Has Made the Rounds

Head Coach Opportunities: Eric Bieniemy Has Made the RoundsOPEN THREAD– We are going to see the Playoff Double-Triple this weekend, starting today. Good stuff, but the game, players and coaches are were not the only thing going on — there are other team needs, that need to get solved… and by many teams. For the Chiefs, there is much to see going on in the background. I really like Eric Bieniemy, his persona, his dedication and presence.

This photo is one which captures him as I see him, as advocated by Deshaun Watson, the QB of the Houston Texans (a lot more about Houston is covered below). It could be that the new Texan GM sets up a session in the future? EB has already interviewed with the other teams. If Watson and Nick Caserio were on the same page (???) and brought Bieniemy to Houston, I think it would be a success.

Watson is one of the top Quarterbacks in the NFL. I regard him to be one of the top 5. With the right HC and the right decision making about the draft, he would be exactly what Eric Bieniemy would regard as:

  • a true Gem of a quarterback
  • a player bound for the Super Bowl
  • a player that Eric could help build a team around

Note: More about dealing with the Texans Quagmire below… and… there is a lot of Quagmire to deal with.

Keep in mind, all interviews that are discussed related to teams and coaches are “Virtual” for Covid-19 reasons.

Eric Bieniemy – KC Offensive Coordinator, Former NFL RB

It’s tough to focus on the teams our very own Offensive Coordinator has interviewed with. I want do this, but first, of the 6 Head Coaching interviews he could have had scheduled, only one team did not request an interview ➡️ The Houston Texans. During this Playoff Bye Week, EB has had interviews with the five other teams needing a new HC. Over the past 3 offseasons, Bieniemy has had 12 Head Coaching interviews in all.

First Tier Team Positions

The Atlanta Falcons and the Jacksonville Jaguars –– There are a couple of good matches for Bieniemy at these locations, so I will focus on those two teams first. The Falcons parted ways with HC Dan Quinn as well as their GM Thomas Dimitroff. That could end up being an ideal point of time to get on board. Depending on the GM that the Falcons decide upon, this could very well be an enticing situation for him to assume the reins of the HC position. They are an established team… which… needs work. They also have a veteran QB in Matt Ryan. However, Ryan, in my opinion, is not the right answer. The style of play is similar to the Chiefs, but the Falcons defense needs work.

Caveat: If EB were to take a tender for the Falcons, it would have to be with the understanding that he wants to go get his own Starting QB. Matt Ryan, the Falcon’s QB, has consistently thrown for about 4,500 yards per season, he is only 35 and is a good QB, but is not the game changer that Bieniemy should want. If he took the Atlanta job, he would have to form a workable relationship with Ryan to accept any offer, but with an understanding that he wants to get his own QB, sooner, rather than later.

The Jacksonville Jaguars — The second potential team that I think is a good match, are the Jacksonville Jaguars. The interview took place on Thursday. The team does need a franchise QB and my reasoning that this a good fit is that the Jaguars are ripe for the picking. Developing a role at Jacksonville would be a good place to begin his career as a HC and do so from scratch, with a new GM as well. So who that would also be a factor. They have no settled franchise QB although Gardner Minshew has flashed some potential in 2019. However, ex-head coach, Doug Marrone had him competing for opportunities with Mike Glennon and Jake Luton. From what I saw of Minshew in 2019, I thought the Jaguars had a potential franchise QB. From what I saw in 2019, Minshew turned heads. He could be a QB to start with if Bieniemy had the opportunity to obtain the position at Jacksonville. The weather’s great there and so is the fishing.

I don’t like his doofy hair cut.

Part of the reason that both GM Dave Caldwell and HC Doug Marrone were fired was mismanaging the finding of a franchise QB. Enter the new GM and Head Coach (possibly Eric Bieniemy). I think this might be the right opportunity, if it comes Eric’s way. I have no feel for what working under Khan entails. That is part of the picture too. It doesn’t hurt at all they EB would immediately have the first pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Second Tier Team Positions

Lions, Jets and Chargers — Other NFL Interviews took place with the Lions, and Jets. Man I would like to come away with positives about either football club, but I am not optimistic about either organization who seem to stumble year to year, Staff to staff and make no progress. Eric has also interviewed with the Los Angeles Chargers as well. If they weren’t in the Chiefs division that might be a possible match, but I think Eric would not consider it since he would have to face the Chiefs twice each year. I am not stating unequivocally that Eric wouldn’t accept a job from one of these three teams. I am stating it appears to me to be less plausible than the potential of getting on board with the Falcons, or, better yet (?) The Jaguars.

Covering the Quagmire is part of the Deal – “Fire Easterby”

The Houston Texans did not request an interview with Bieniemy. Now go figure that one out if you will. Deshaun Watson needs an offense oriented HC and BIeniemy fits that Bill. Instead, the representing Owner, Cal Easterby who hired a New England GM and no interview was requested. This hit the wire immediately with a #fireEasterby routine all over town and the country. You see why I call it the Quagmire via the tweet below. After Nick Caserio was hired as GM, Watson Tweeted: “Some Things never change…” Of course the rumor mill immediately got started about Watson demanding a trade. John McClain, Sportswriter for the Houston Chronicle, observed: “I have a better chance of becoming the Texans next head coach than Watson does of getting traded.”

I am familiar with the Texans and was here for their inaugural pair of seasons. Things don’t work out well down here on Buffalo Bayou, so I am going to have fun with this to finish up. Here is some recent activity related to the hiring of Nick Caserio’s (BTW, Cal refers to Call McNair, who is part of the Texans ownership group).

From this tweet you can see that things are peachy here in the Bayou City (Houston, Texas). You can also see what fans feel about the joy of replacing the GM, B.O’B., here in Texas with a New England business-Tree choice: Nick Caserio. I am not sure that if I were Eric Bieniemy, I would want to visit Houston except as an opponent. Things remain humorous and as you can tell, from the above, the Texans remain in a Quagmire (rhymes with Dumpster Fire)… to say the least

If you want to read the latest, Yahoo Sports covered the situation with an article by Jason Owens which you can find here.

I wonder if the Jaguars would cough up draft picks to get Watson in house. I am sure that would Catch Eric Bieniemy’s attention. I also wonder if being the HC of the Texans would intrigue Bieniemy enough to grab the job, should Nick Caserio decide to get on top of what should be done in Houston and Eric Bieniemy fits what they need to get done?
