I was going to write an article about my experiences growing up as a Kansas City Chiefs fan with so many Raiders fans surrounding me. Then I looked at the title to my article and changed my mind. I am just going to jot down random bits of Chiefs news and any other thoughts I may have as I am recounting the news I may have for the week. So sit back and buckle up. It’s going to be…. interesting to say the least.
The Kansas City Chiefs have signed running back Damien Williams. The ex-Miami Dolphin will join the stable of backs that now consist of Kareem Hunt, Spencer Ware, Akeem Hunt and Charcandrick West. With the leagues leading rusher and another back who would be considered an every down starter on another team we seem stacked at the position. So one could reasonably figure that Williams was brought in as competition for West. We would very well be seeing the end of the West era in Chiefs history.
I remember sitting in the stands of Arrowhead stadium watching Tyler Thigpen throw horrible pass after horrible pass. It is one of the worst memories I have as a Chiefs fan. My brother and I scraped together every penny we had to purchase tickets and pay for the gas it would take to drive 3 hours to watch our beloved Chiefs play in the greatest stadium in the NFL. Needless to say we didn’t get our money’s worth that day. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers shellacked the Chiefs on their own turf. You know its a bad day when you begin wondering to yourself why they didn’t put Brodie Croyle in.
I was at the playoff game. You know the one. The only one where a quarterback completed a touchdown pass to himself. There was this Tennessee fan behind us. He couldn’t have been more than 11 or 12. He was so upset that by halftime his parents agreed to take him home. If only he would have stayed he could have seen the dumbfounded looks on 70 thousand faces as a clearly superior team imploded before their very eyes. 21 to 3. That horrible showing will live in infamy for the rest of our lives.
Kansas City has brought in Xavier Williams to work on the defensive line and more importantly help at the nose tackle position. The run stuffing Kansas City native (a suburb like Grandview is close enough right?) was a restricted free agent from the Arizona Cardinals. With the Cardinals Williams was a willing tackler and a blue collar lineman. Now with the Chiefs he will be asked to stop the run and get penetration in the offensive backfield. His addition will prove to be greatly beneficial especially with the loss of the previous occupant of the position, Bennie Logan. Williams will get a chance to play for his home town team. Something most can only dream of.
Apparently Brett Veach isn’t ready to rest in his pursuit of offensive weapons for his new starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Veach has brought in receiver Kendall Wright in an attempt to remedy the vacancy left by Albert Wilson after he departed in free agency. Imagine the nightmare opposing teams will have in trying to cover Watkins, Hill, Kelce, Hunt, Ware, and Wright? What would you do as a defender? Get close to the line to try and stop Hunt or Ware and get destroyed over the top by Hill and Watkins? Double team Kelce and get torched by Wright. Cover Hill and Watkins like a blanket and watch Hunt and Ware run you over like a freight train. Hopefully we can get Wright under contract and we immediately go from having a dangerous offense to quite possibly the league’s best.
Just think. There is only 166 more days until the start of the 2018 NFL season. It is going by so slowly. At least the draft is coming up quickly and we will have something to argue about. Get your insults ready.
So let me know what you think of my new setup for articles and as always VIVA LA JET SWEEP and GO CHIEFS!
