Is NT Roy Miller the Last Big Piece in the Offseason Plan?

When the offseason began for the Kansas City Chiefs, the biggest question on everyone’s mind was: are the Chiefs going to keep Eric Berry or Dontari Poe? Once Berry was signed to a huge contract, there was ostensibly no room to sign Poe and off he went to another team (the reality is that the Chiefs signed Poe’s replacement Bennie Logan for almost exactly what Poe signed with the Falcons for). Poe’s reported back problems limited his ability to move laterally and play the run so the Chiefs signed Bennie Logan. However, it has been questioned whether or not Logan could replace Poe when all by himself because… while Logan played 45% of his teams snaps (467 total defensive snaps)  in 2016, Poe played 83% of the Chiefs snaps (821 total defensive snaps).

We’ve watched Andy Reid and John Dorsey (at that time) long enough to know that they have an “Offseason Plan.” When Bennie Logan came aboard, I was pleased because he’s very good versus the run and the Chiefs were #26 against the run in 2016. So… problem fixed. Well, not quite. Although Logan played in a new defensive scheme (to him) in 2016 it meant that his snaps would go down. Although that means that Logan might have fresh legs this year, he’s never played as many snaps for the Eagles as Poe has for the Chiefs in one season. The bottom line? Even though the Chiefs had signed Logan… they would need to pick up another monster of the mid-way… meaning, a Nose Tackle… which could actually be effective while giving Logan a rest every now and then.

Enter… Roy Miller

Not so fast. Although Roy Miller is a good and sturdy NT, he is coming off of an Achilles tendon injury much like Derrick Johnson (Miller missed the final10 games of last year). You may reason that Miller should be able to come back from that because DJ is doing so for the second time in four years… but that may be like comparing apples and oranges.

If Roy Miller is right… the Chiefs will have signed themselves a gem. He was signed for a one-year deal, he was a 3rd round pick of Tampa Bay’s in 2009 (81st overall), attended Texas and goes 6-foot-2 and weighs 318 lbs.

Miller has been waiting this summer to find a team because he wanted to be healthy to work out for his new team. He worked out for the Dolphins ten days ago because Miami is not happy with any of the interior DL except Ndamukong Suh.

“There’s a few teams that have shown some interest here and there,” Miller said. “I believe my agent has a few – there’s a couple of trips I have to take – this month. It was always [the plan] to kind of wait until mid-July, so I can go out there with enough time to heal and time to get back in shape and then go out there and compete.” -USAToday

If Roy Miller sticks with the Chiefs, he could be considered the last big piece in an offseason plan that has taken many fans by surprise because… I don’t think anyone thought the Chiefs would… let JC go… allow Jeremy Maclin to walk… fire the master architect of this roster John Dorsey… or draft the way they drafted (although I must admit that many fans have been crazy in love with the Mahomes selection). The point is… while this spring and summer has been full of surprises, the plan very likely included the signing of TWO NOSE TACKLES (Logan and Miller) from the very beginning of the offseason.

Here’s hoping the new plan is right on the money. If it is… every Sunday could be Miller Time. One of my favorite writer’s also likes what Miller could be for the Chiefs.
