It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Y… – How do you like being lied to? Not much, I’d guess, but I’m only guessing. The Kansas City Chiefs don’t mind breaking the golden rule… because they don’t treat others they way they want to be treated… and that begins by telling the truth, right? Wrong. Sometimes. Now, we know that telling the truth builds trust, so if fans trust what the Chiefs brass are saying, then it works to build that trust. Oh, wait… football is a business… so those rules don’t apply here. It would seem.
.
Andy Reid said a month ago,
.
.
“Not bleak by any means”… is that why they cut Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz then signed one of the best Offensive Guards in the league? It appears we have an impasse on our hands. An impasse? Hmm… “a situation in which no progress is possible, especially because of disagreement” — ??? — yep, an impasse would perfectly describe what we’re seeing and hearing here.
.
On the other hand… Brett Veach also said recently,
.
“I can’t see us running out of the gates the first week in free agency…”
.
However, let’s not forget that Veach ended that sentence by saying… “… to sign a receiver.”
.
Sure, much of what comes out of the mouths of Brett Veach and Andy Reid are designed to be a smoke screen to hide their intentions in Free Agency and more importantly, the draft. Take a look at some other quotes by Veach recently, and the truth streams from his lips:
.
“… we’ll work our conversions to stay under the cap…”
.
Boy have the Chiefs ever gotten under the cap!
.
“Again, from a 1,000-foot view when you look at our roster composition, I think that we certainly want to build back our offensive line…”
.
“Want to build back the offensive line?“ You can say that again. Even my Grandma knows that one (and she’s long since passed).
.
“Looking forward is the blueprint for the offseason, we’re certainly going to look on the offensive line and defensive line and the linebacker position to get better…”
.
Wow, the OL, the DL and the LBs… I never would have guessed.
.
Sometimes, Brett Veach and Andy Reid tell us what we already know, but in many cases, it’s a comforting message because we hope they see what we see as well.
.
So, let’s catch up on some of the moves that have taken place so far:
.
.
The release of RB Damien Williams surprised me more than any move the Chiefs have made this week.
.
.
The Chiefs must do more to protect Patrick Mahomes. I believe they will before the draft… then… during the draft as well.
.
.
Matt Derrick hits the nail on the head here, K.C. needs DE Taco Charlton to elevate his game and finally reach his 2017 first round potential (pick #28 overall).
.
.
I’m not a fan of Andrew Wylie… as a starter. He could provide some needed spot relief for Tackles and Guards, but I hope he never sees a starting role with the Chiefs again. Ever.
.
.
I’m a big fan of Darrel WIlliams and remember, he was a team captain during his time at LSU (voted on by his temmates).
.
Those are not nearly all the moves Veach has made this offseason. Other moves include:
.
- Anthony Sherman retired
- Austin Reiter was notified that he won’t be re-signed
- Alex Brown got the same notification
- Deon Yelder, same
- Eric Fisher and Mitch Schwartz were cut, which didn’t surprise me (and it needed to be done)
.
Many are calling for the Chiefs to sign OT Trent Williams, but the 49ers have made him a 4-year, $80 million offer and Veach would presumably need to top that. Plus, there are other teams with more cap space than K.C. so it looks like he’d have to want to give a bit of a discount and play for a greater chance to win a ring. One to watch for sure.
.
.
There are other potential renters for the Chiefs OT vacancy, like Alejandro Villanueva (both Alejandro Villanueva and Trent Williams turn 33 years old later this year). The only hangup with him is, he may not be the kind of zone blocking lineman the Chiefs usually covet. Villanueva is a 6-foot-9 man mover and while I’d love to see K.C. go to those kinds of players along their front, it goes against their usual design.

If you don’t keep up with RGR Football, Ryan Tracy and Dan Harms run a YouTube show Monday through Friday evenings and their take on all things Chiefs is superior, so you might want to check them out. Here, they welcomed in Nate Tice from The Athletic Football Show yesterday evening for a 24:06 episode:
.
.
.
Nate Tice suggests OT Alex Leatherwood (Alabama) or OT Liam Eichenberg (Notre Dame) for the Chiefs at #31, and I agree. David Bell and I have done our own Mock Draft 1.0 — which we’ll be releasing later this week — and we’ve identified so many teams needing Offensive Tackles, that more may end up going in Round One than we initially thought might, and that’s bad news for K.C.. So, if Eichenberg, or Leatherwood, are still on the board (assuming Veach stays at that pick), I hope the he’ll take a strong-long look at both of them (which, I believe he will).
.
Here’s an early peek at our Mock 1.0: about OTs in Round One, we’ve already Mocked Alex Leatherwood, but Liam Eichenberg is still available at #31.
