Come one, come all! Welcome to this week’s edition of The Sunday Sum Up! I’ve put together some interesting good-bits for you to sift through on this fantastic day! Let’s get started:
Et tu, Charles? Et tu?
So we have seen some interesting things in the past few years. I’ve watched players of all types come and go. The Bowe Show moved to Cleveland then gets subsequently canceled before sweeps. I’ve seen with my own eyes absurd play calling that would baffle the greatest scientific minds of our generation. Heck, I’ve even seen Harris catch a pass. I know you may be declaring shenanigans, but I swear to you, HE CAUGHT THE BALL
Of all the crazy things we’ve seen happen there was always one constant, Jamaal Charles was not a Denver Bronco. It even sounds blasphemous. Charles wearing a blue and orange jersey is like putting tuna on your pb&j. Sure it sounds interesting but it is something that should never EVER happen. Well, hell has frozen over people. Charles, through a crazy set of circumstances that I will not get into here because I may begin to tear up AGAIN, is now a Donkey. Let that soak in. I know it is crushing news. We know this pain all too well. Neil Smith left us for the mile high city and people are still upset about it. Apparently, J.C. will wear number 28 in Denver:

I’m tryna be last one wearing 25 lol https://t.co/tfda3KzAQD

For some reason, I don’t think Jamaal looks or sounds that happy in this 4-second clip.

Now we can not begrudge Charles for wanting to continue his career with KC. He even said he would have taken a pay cut if only the phone were to ring. Alas, that call was never made and Charles moved on. Good luck Charles. You will always be one of my favorites. Except for two times-per-year and then I hope you fumble your brains out!
The Money Behind The Bear
In a surprising move John Dorsey, you know the guy in the office upstairs down the hall? Not that office, the big office. There you go. Well, that guy probably just ran you out of his office made a weird cap saving gamble. Basically, he released Jay Howard, a dominant defensive lineman in the prime years of his career, out of nowhere. Even more puzzling is that releasing Howard only cleared up 1.375 million in cap space. Our punter makes more than that. Think I’m joking? Dustin Colquitt has a cap hit of 1.85 million this year. In the grand scheme of things maybe we could have found a little money elsewhere but Dorsey believed Howard to be expendable and he was thusly released. From the Chicago Tribune:
“The Chiefs’ decision to terminate Howard’s contract left them with $5 million in dead money in 2017. That would be reduced, though, by the amount the Bears pay him this season. Terms of his deal with the Bears were not immediately known, but the Chiefs created $1.4 million in salary-cap space by releasing him.”
I am of the mind that Andy Reid told our GM that he needed someone more aggressive against the run. After watching us get gashed by every rushing unit fielded against us this is my only conclusion. Howard was a capable lineman, but a run stuffer he is not. So, now the former Chief is a Chicago Bear. Which is great for us because if he wouldn’t have been picked up somewhere not only would we have lost a decent man in the trenches, we would have paid fully anyways. Risky move Mr. Dorsey, very risky. But hey, you gotta take risks sometimes and John, I dig your style.
Pack Your Bags, It’s Time For Summer (Spring) Camp!
For anyone who has ever been to summer camp, you would know it is a time for magic and wonder. Swimming in the lake, horseback riding, archery. Ahh…. wait, what? I’m being told it’s not that kind of camp. Saturday marked the first day of the Kansas City Chiefs Rookie Minicamp (applause, whistle, applause), it is about time we saw some on-field action.
It was more a day for learning and getting acquainted with the coaching staff in the morning, but in the afternoon we finally got to see some men storm the field. 70 players were invited to attend the minicamp including 5 players already on the Chiefs roster, the 6 draftees, and 12 undrafted free agents. 47 other players were invited to tryouts. It has been a long, long offseason so far and fans are rabid for any news even related to the Chiefs so the start of camp is something to look forward to.
So, we were able to see the rookies put through the paces running drills, kicking and catching balls, and we were even able to see Patrick Mahomes show off some of his talents chucking the ball downfield. Now it’s only the first day so I do not have too much news, yet. Rest assured I will keep you posted with anything interesting that may come up.
So there you have it. Just a few things of note happening in the past week. As always VIVA LA JET SWEEP, and GO CHIEFS!
